I've had a couple 4" -3s and see more of them floating around than the 3". I don't know how many of each were made, but in my world the 4" seems more common - the 5" are very common.

Not sure if relevant, but I believe that S&W offered a program in the mid- to late-1990s that would convert a 5" 625 into a 4" barrel length. This was an effort to appease the folks shooting 625s in IDPA after the sport reduced the max barrel length. That's about all the details I know about it.

S&W did NOT offer a program to cut 5" down to 4"; BUT a company in Ohio named SDM Fabricating did do it for lots of people who wanted 4" 625s. I believe they are still in business and make replacement front sights with fiber optics. So many people apparently complained that S&W dropped the 5" 625s but has made a lot of 4s. USPSA revolver shooters all use 627s or 929s now.

From the inception of IDPA, the 5" ruled Revolver Division. A few years later the Founders decided that the 5" was not practical and limited it to 4" or less. Several IDPA competitors suddenly had division illegal guns to deal with.

Yes and now they've moved it to 4 1/4" bbl. due to Canada's rules. The rule-making body of IDPA drives me nuts. The clear bias against moonclips is ludicrous and supposedly caused by revo shooter who was using speedloaders and strenuously objected to moonclips. If I use moonclips I must meet a much higher power factor. Making rules to suit ONE loud complainer is bush league stuff!!!

To answer your question OP, yes the 4 inch barrel pre-lock 625's are more scarce than the 625 3 inch barrels as they made more of the latter.
