3914 Grip question

So, you 3913 and 3914 type addicts, do you like the factory grips or do you put aftermarket grips on them for EDC?


The one I bought recently has Hogues on it, but that makes it as thick as a 6914 with factory grips.


I have a set of factory grips on the way, but I thought I would check with the experts before changing back to factory.

Not a 3913/14, but my 908, the value line version of the same guns, has the standard grip and it fits my hand well. I had the Hogue rubber grips that came standard on the CS9 and they were distinctively unlikable to my hands. I'd like to put the gray grips on the 908, but that's a girly thing.
 
The hogue grips are monstrous in thickness and feel like a fist full of play-doh in the hand. The factory grip is far superior but admittedly I add traction tape to mine. The thickness changes pretty dramatically and the gun goes from "ok" to "fantastic".
 
Been a fan of the 39xx guns since 1990/91.

I don't like the factory grips, for me. they feel too thin and flat.

Went with the Hogue's in 1991 .... rubber on my first year 3913....then bit the bullet and got a set(s) of Hogue checkered wood grips...... think micro Model 39..... ASP or Trapper.........

Thicker??? yes.... but they are arched into a palm swell; not at all like a 69xx gun ( which I also like; for carry my 69xx guns are factory grips, which I've stippled. ).

In the end....... for me. the bottom line ...... in 28 years of carrying a 39xx's (3913,3914, 3913NL) on an almost daily basis ..... having Hogue checkered wood grips on several 39xx guns has NOT had any practical effect on carrying one concealed; but the grip is like having a micro 39/ASP/Trapper.

While close to a 69xx gun's thickness at the thickest part ( top of the arch) of the grip, a few millimeters is worth it for a better carry gun; and as I said, "no practical impact" on concealed carry.

I find this interesting. The only wood hogues I tried were on my 5903 and they were huge. I am still toying with the idea that the KSD wood grips might be worth a try. Never seen them in person though.

Hogue wood or rubber grips on double stack guns are......IMHO..... way, way, way too thick for the average size hand......... all my double stack 3rd Gen carry guns are stippled factory grips.
 
FYI... I went from Hogue Rubber.... to smooth wood...... finally to checkered wood.....

IMO bit the bullet and just get the checkered wood ....... strange but true... the checkered wood "feels" thinner in the hand .......

In the end I sent 2 or 3 sets of smooth grips back to Hogue to be checkered..... . at the time the price difference was $20
 
Again FWIW ; I have couple pair of KSD grips on a Beretta 92 Compact and a Compact single stack (Type-M); both are stippled wood......... I like them a lot.

But after 25 years.......... decided not to chase my tail on the 39xx guns.

Iggy ..... there's nothing wrong with the Hogue rubber grips...... the wood grips just look better and don't grab onto the cover garment.

I recently picked up a 3914, not the easiest thing to acquire here in California. (It works well with our 10 round magazine laws). I really didn't like the feel of the stock grips (too thin). I bought a set of Houge checkered grips which I felt were to large for my hands. I then put on a set of KSD grips which look feel a lot better to me. They do have maybe 1/16" of fore and aft play. Not enough for me to take them of however.
I think the best, but also the ugliest set up would be the stock grips with a Houge slip on that has a finger grove. A friend has one on his Shield. But then, it's hard to make a polymer pistol even uglier........
I also put a spurred hammer, and Trijicon night sights on it to replace the Novaks. I suppose it has turned into a sort of mini Model 39. I like it!

As usual, grips are a personal thing. My hands are medium sized for a guy, but my fingers are short so many semi-auto grips make the trigger reach too long.

I would say that I have the stock gray grips on my 3913 and really like them. They are just right.

But I won't say that because it's a girly thing.

(To make matters worse, it's an 3913LS model).

Prefer the non-slip grip of rubber

I replaced the factory grips on my 3913 with Hogue rubber grips. Yes they are a tad thicker than I would like but still better than the factory grips. I much prefer the rubber non-slip grip.
 
I have the factory OEM grip on my 3914. With a rubber grip sleeve over it. Best of both worlds. ;) Regards 18DAI
 
The stock grip feels a bit small to me.
First I went with Hogue rubbers love the feel and it shot great, but tended to print under my wool vest. Tried Hogue smooth wood, but it was as fat as my 6906, sold them to my LGS owner for his 3913 (that I didn't buy)

Got a set of KSDs, love them, but they seem fragile and I can be tough! on gear, figured I'd eventually trash them.

Back to factory, may take 18DAI's suggestion and try a grip sleeve.

LOL, I keep trying to EDC a semi, but always go back to a J Frame.
 
The big issue with asking "which grip" questions is everyone's hand size, combined with finger length, is different. So what works for one of us won't work for a lot of others...... which is why we all have or end up with a "big box-O-grips".


Mic'ed a set of my Hogue Checkered wood grips on a 3913: 30mm at the top of the arch (palm swell) ..... the grip frame is 20mm at the bottom...... so at max the wood is 5mm thick on each side of the frame.

6906 factory grips (stippled by me, on my 6015 FrankenSmith) are 32.7 mm wide (and more squared off) on a 26mm grip frame..... say 3.5mm of grip on each side or the frame.

I'd guess grip material thickness would be the same on both 69xx and 39xx grips...... so a 39xx factory grip would be 27mm (20+7mm) thick..... vs 30 w/ checkered Hogues... 1.5mm difference at max on each side.

As I stated above I've been using checkered Hogue wood grips for at least 25 years now...... after experimenting with factory, grip sleeves..... seem to recall some bicycle or skateboard tape........the smooth Hogue wood grips "seemed" much thicker than the checkered.......may be all in my mind;but to me the combination feels to me very much like the grip on the Model 39 which many feel is one of the best grip frame/grip produced.



I carry IWB in a Sparks Summer Special or Executive Companion (sits a tad lower on the belt than the SS and a bit more angle)

Nothing wrong IMHO with carrying a 6906/04/PC Shorty-9 ......... :D

After 28 years of carrying both 39xx and 69xx guns; after getting the right grip (for me) on each gun..... I've found no practical difference in carrying either one.

As one who carries at least one spare magazine; the 3913 mag is thinner than the 6906 magazine. My spare 6906 mag is generally a 5906 mag w/ a +2 adapter so, it's also much shorter in my case.

In my "Burb of the Burgh" I'm generally good to go with 7+1 +8......
