1st duty gun

"Lucky's Liquor & Sporting Goods"?

What could possibly go wrong? :D :D
Well it was a small shop probably occupying the size of two slots of a small strip mall. As you walked in the guns and stuff were on the right and the liquor, etc were on the left. No real separation but you could tell which environment you were in. He had good deals on both liquor and guns. He carried my favorite bourbon at the time that I guess is no longer made: Ancient Ancient Age. For many years I've only been able to find regular Ancient Age.

As for what could go wrong, I didn't think anything of it at the time. However, our after work choir practice, I think (I know) that had more potential for going wrong. My experience is that regular choir practice of that type is largely a thing of the past.

Back in the 1990s, I used to visit Ruff's Guns and Liquor in Flagstaff, AZ. They had a drive up window for those who wanted boolets and booze without stepping out of their vehicle. My first duty issue was a beat up 4-inch Mod.10 as I recall. I quickly replaced it with a 4-inch Mod. 686 on my own dime. Wish I'd kept that 686. Good luck in your quest.

In 1976, I was sworn in as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff and served out of the Twin Peaks Sheriff's Substation at Lake Arrowhead in San Bernardino County. I carried my own Model 19-3, blued 4" with TT TH TS WO and RR in a Safety Speed of Montebello, CA, Breakfront holster. That first year working in LE in the mountains made for some of my favorite career memories.

First duty revolver was a personally owned M64. Jail deputies had to buy their own if they wanted one. Office owned M64s were in the armory for issue to do inmate transports. Court, Civil Process, and deputies assigned to the Transportation Section were issued M64s and could carry a personal revolver if desired. We allowed Colt, Dan Wesson, Ruger and, of course, S&W. .38/.357 chambering and 3 or 4 inch barrel only.
M19/66 were popular in the early '80s and the L frame guns quickly became popular after their introduction.
I remember several of the court guys I worked with having to go to the local cop shop to have the recall work done on their L frame Smiths. There was a retired S&W employee on payroll there that did that sort of work and he would test fire the revolver in the back of the store after fininshing the work. Those were the days...

In the military I was routinely issued a Remington-Rand 1911. My first personal duty gun at the county jail was a Glock model 21. When I finally went to work at a women's college I carried a S&W model 64, loaded with Federal Hydroshocks, I never felt unarmed, or out gunned by anyone. Since then I've carried mostly Glock model 22's.

Ah, the early eighties in Law Enforcement. Everyone wanted a Model 686, especially here in South Florida.

Wasn't the early '80s but I believe my brother carried this 686-6 for a while.

I remember him telling me he turned in his first issue gun and later posted the info about the gun here on the forum hoping to find it.

I can't remember what it was but I do remember him telling me it was a S&W .38 Special and was a piece of junk. LOL

First issued duty gun (1978) was a Model 15. After probation, you could carry a personally owned firearm and I bought a Stainless Security Six (I wanted a Model 66 but they were rare and expensive). I carried the Ruger until my wife bought me a Colt Python as a birthday/anniversary present (I still have the Python, and replacement M15 and Security Six).

When I went on active duty with the Air Force, I carried a Model 15, both 2 and 4 inch versions, before converting to the M9 (Note: I deployed to Desert Shield with a 4 inch Model 15. As soon as we landed in Saudi Arabia, our Model 15s were collected and we were issued M9s; we didn't have holsters for the first month so were just stuffed them in a pocket of our survival vest when we flew.)

After I retired from the Air Force and returned to LE, I carried a Ruger P90, then a S&W 4566, and finally a Glock 21 issued by the Department.

When I did my college internship with the sheriff's department, the only LE appropriate handgun I owned was a 1911 built on a Essex Arms frame. The chief deputy frowned, but approved it. The hole in the top of his desk, which came from another young deputy's 1911, may have had something to do with that. :D

Since it was obvious he didn't care for my 1911, I went by the local fun shop, uh gun shop, and bought a S&W 1917. I carried it for the rest of the college quarter. I sold the 1917 in order to buy a M27-2. I had been looking for an affordable .44 Special, but couldn't find one in my price range. Since I had been reading all of Skeeter Skelton's articles on converting N frame .357s, I took the M27 and a new 6 1/2" 1950 .44 Special barrel to Walker Arms in Selma, Alabama, where they re-chambered the cylinder and installed the barrel.

I carried the .44 for a couple of years, but put it aside when I bought a new M25-5 .45 Colt. A number of handguns followed.

Jump forward to 2005. I had originally wanted Walker Arms to cut the barrel on my .44 conversion to 5", but some how that didn't get on the work order. I took it David Clements in Woodlawn, Virginia and had him cut the barrel, install a Baughman ramp and re-blue it. It was a tack driver as a 6 1/2" and it still is as a 5". I need to get it out and shoot it some.

Speaking for my younger brother, it was a round butt 4" regular (not heavy) barrel M10. That was in 1970 at age 20 which was his first of 30 years on the M.P.D.C. (Metropolitan Police District of Columbia). The first Glock I ever shot was his issued Glock 17 when the MPDC transitioned around 1985.
My first and only "duty gun" was in 2000 when I worked as an armored truck driver/courier . It was a M67.

1st issued to me was a 4" 66-1. But as soon as I finished probation I started carrying my dad's mdl 66. I still have both of them. When we were authorized, I bought a 1086; had special department laser etching on the slide. I still have it too. I'm still carrying the Glock 31 that replaced it, but I gotta get outta here quick or they'll make me carry a 9mm within the next year.

I also still carry my model 60 with a bobbed hammer. I get my 35 year plaque next month & I'll hang em up shortly thereafter.

The large metropolitan agency I worked for in 73 issued K 38's converted to DAO, duty ammo was lead RN 38's. Changed agencies in 79 and moved to Az., issued 686 with 38 Plus p lead SWC HP. Carried that for a year and moved up to a model 58.

I have an interesting reversal of sorts. My first duty gun was a personally owned Glock 19 when I started in September of 1995. Fast forward many years, and after shooting revolvers competitively, I now carry a 66-2 when in the occasional uniform. The other days assigned to the range, I carry a heavily customized 66-8. I think I got more nostalgic the older I got. Either way most of the young recruits can't keep up with me and my wheel guns.
