Cleaned out the safe of a few handguns that I no longer wanted. Along the way to the rear of the safe I glanced at my 4" 686. Felt it in my hands. It balances nice. No way, I can't get rid of this.... So now my Beretta mod 84 & mod 950 BS are at my LGS on consignment.

I can live without those. :D

I feel the same way about my 4 inch 586 no dash, my first duty gun. Besides being (my opinion) the perfect all around .357 magnum, I have a lot of history with this gun, including saving my bacon at least once for sure, and maybe a couple other times I am not aware of, as I was never shy about having it in my hand if I though the circumstances warranted it.

I've been selling off guns (43) over the last 5 years and buying fewer (5). The way I found to make it less painful I use is: I list my 10 favorite firearms. Then turn around and list 10 of my least favorite firearms. Then sell as many of those as quickly as I can (usually take 6 to 8 months). Repeat! The favorite list has remains the same for 5 years running! Some of the least favorites are still in the fold, I'm thinking of doing something more drastic, like a pawn shop for about 12 guns! But first the Spring flea markets are almost here!

BTW, "The Last gun I would get rid of", is a junker Iver Johnson 38S&W hammerless top-break. During the depression it was my grandfather only gun (probably his only gun ever) But he shot a rabbit with it that was the only meat the family of 4 had for 3 weeks! It was important enough to keep no matter how bad things got! Why should I question an decision to keep the only gun that's been in the family for 90+ years! Yes, I have better, prettier, and more valuable guns; but they have no history of doing anything for our family!

I too have a 4" 686, I do like it, but compared to other 357's I have, it is nothing great or extra special! Just average (like it is suppose to be!)

The first gun I "sold off" was a IMI Desert Eagle Mk II in 50 AE that I bought in December 1991 (before general release) and couldn't get my money back out of it until 2014! That was a large ticket item. Most have just been "Ivan Surplus". The "surplus" Brownings and Weatherby's have generated cash for other fun things! Most of the surplus were just "junk" guns I had!

The one handgun I could no longer part with would be my old 60s M-57. It has saved me a tine or two. Another that can't go is a Wilson Combat 45 I got from an old friend for a give away price..just to get it(and all his guns)out of his house for a time of 5-6 months. He passed away 2 months later. That is another story though..and a sad one. He was going to buy them all back after a time and I was going to get to keep one of my choice. It was going to be the Wilson though..

Hard to imagine getting rid of my 4" customized (round butt/ Spegel Extended Checkered Boot grips, custom front sight and action job).... 686-no dash.......... had it 30 plus years. Well my Dad "borrowed" it for the better part of a decade.... while living,in retirement at the cabin.

But like" Potato Chips" ...you can't have just one!!!!!!!

My Dad's Police guns of course....... Family heirlooms

...... and my own carry guns for the last 25 plus years....
3" Model 66 (1989) With Spegel Boot Grips,..........
3913NL (91) with Checkered Hogue Wood grips ,.....
PC Shorty-9 (96) and
my Beretta 92F Compact (88) wearing a new(er) set of VZ ultra thin G-10 grips in "Black Cherry".

Mine is a very pedestrian 19-5 "sold" to me by my BIL who is retired LEO in a "friends and family" deal.

He is more of a Colt fan and just couldn't warm up to this particular handgun.

Carried infrequently and shot even less....this one will be the last to go.

Shown "as-received" and with new shoes.

I have a few that I can't part with, but the most obvious is thumbnailed below. It was given to me by a good friend, now some years deceased, when he moved to a less gun-friendly state than MA. It is an H&R Model 195, with Roper grips, and has an adjustable sight radius. The first few such pistols were made for an experiment on sight radius by Roper, but it is clear from the serial number of mine that it was made much later, probably about 1936.

I don't think that anyone knows yet for sure, but there were probably around a dozen adjustable-sight-radius Model 195 pistols made.

It would be down between my old Ruger red pad tang safety light weight 250-3000. Its taking everything from mule deer in Montana to turkey in Virginia. I still have the receipt for it, I think it was around $300 originally. Both daughters now have one also. Theirs cost a lot more then mine originally did. My youngest daughters is exactly like mine. The oldest has the manlicher stock.

I've got two revolvers I'd never get rid of, both Model 28-2 6" bbl. models. The first one was given to me by my late father after I got out of the Army, the only firearm he ever gave me. I practiced with that gun 3-4 times a week while I was in college studying LE. When I wasn't studying or shooting I was reloading more ammo for my next trip to the gravel pit.

The LE agency I joined (and am retired from) issued the same revolver, only with the agency name stamped on the sideplate. The one issued to me was used, evidently produced by S&W in 1968. I shot Master with that revolver and carried it for ten years before we went to auto pistols. (I was allowed to purchase it when my new pistol was issued to me.)

I wouldn't part with either one, although they will go to my daughters soon enough.

It would be hard to part with my 6" 686. And my 1959 4 screw 6 1/2" 27. And my 6 1/2" 27-7. And my 28-2. And my 642-1 and 642-1 (my brothers backup). And my DSA FN FAL. :D

My M&P .45 and my Colt 1911A1 might be hard to part with too.

My .38 Safety, 5" 686-6, my Schofield, Class A engraved 4" 29-2 would and wont be any problems selling.
