Home Invasion Prevention Suggestions

Nobody wants to meet a .410 SD load. The current offerings for the Judge and Governor are more than adequate to convince a recalcitrant home invader that he/she has something better to do at the moment . . .

Dump the Judge. It's a toy for tyros. Get a full size .38 with 4 inch barrel, e.g. Smith 686, Ruger GP100. Load with 158 grain standard pressure loads.

A cheap security fix is to remove the dinky 3/4 inch screws that attach the dead bolt and striker plate in your doors. Those can be kicked in by a high school girl softball player. Go to a hardware store and get a box of three-inch hardened power-drive screws. Get a variable speed drill motor with a #2 phillips bit and drive those babies all the way into the studs. It's not a thug-stopper, but it will require more than an easy kick to break the door open, and will slow Thugs down enough to let you wake up and grab your non-Judge defensive firearms and get ready.

Before I pose my question, I apologize for the length of this preface, but feel a background explanation’s in order. Further, I wasn’t quite sure which forum to place it in (did the preface re: home invasion take precedence, or did the issue re: ammunition for the 460V to deal with this situation take it), and after some debate – I just took a SWAG, and posted it in the ammunition forum. I’ve reprinted my original question here . . .
My wife and I are admittedly elderly. Further, we’re both physically challenged. We don’t live in town, but rather out in the county. We’ve also been the intended victims of a home invasion on 2 separate occasions, both thwarted by sheer bluff.
The 1st occasion involved a man pounding on our front door demanding entrance. I have a shotgun, but it was in a closet upstairs. I told the intended intruder that I had it in hand, that I was aiming it at the door, that I was going to begin counting, and when I got to my “magic number” I was going to fire, blowing a hole in the door, and possibly in him, as well, should he remain standing there. I began counting, and when I looked thru the peep-hole in the door, he was running across the yard to the street – problem alleviated.
The 2nd occasion involved a man standing on our garage roof looking into my study window. Upon seeing him, my wife screamed. I pulled a junk/non-functional Colt 1911 from my bookcase, and held it up for him to see. He did, and went off of the roof in record time. By the time I got downstairs, and out thru the garage, he had gotten into his pickup truck, and was barreling down the street – again, problem alleviated. Running after this would-be intruder wasn’t the best idea, especially with a gun that’s never going to work again – it’s just a fancy rock.
After this 2nd occasion, we summoned the state police. They recommended that we obtain “easily handled”, weapons – handguns, and undergo the training for those guns. We did, and we have. She has a S&W Lady Smith .38 revolver, we “share” a Taurus Judge (loaded with .410 defense shells) (we wanted a S&W Governor, but the store didn’t have any), and I have a S&W 460V revolver (which hasn’t been fired as yet). Research revealed that a large gun with a lighter-load’s optimum for such situations – allowing for less recoil, less resultant muzzle flip, and thus quicker site reacquisition. Therefore, I have no plans to shoot S&W 460 Mag ammunition in this gun. Instead, I plan on shooting .45 Long Colt ammunition.
Now, to my question – while I’d prefer to shoot ammunition with the Honey Badger bullet, I don’t believe that said bullet’s available in .45 LC ammunition. I don’t want to shoot bare lead (cleaning issues . . .), but would rather stick to jacketed/coated bullets, or even solid copper, or some other material. I’d greatly appreciate any constructive recommendations from the members herein. Thx. . .

Doc, I am a professional locksmith. Close to 30 years of helping people like you. I’m here to help. My advice is free.

Layered security starts at the perimeter of your house. Good lighting is a must. But the primary purpose is to give you and yours time. Time to arm yourself and/or get to a safe place.

The older we get, the more time we need. Deadbolts should be above average.. Not made in China. The doors should be an 1 3/4 inch solid core. The deadbolt strike should be steel with three inch woods screws securing it.

In my opinion cameras are a waste of money unless they are monitored 24/7. They only record the event and are not always a good deterrent. Alarms can be a good deterrent but there are no guarantees. If your alarm goes off, it’s too late. Any advantage you had is gone.

But, if your doors are good and strong and your deadbolts are as well, you will have plenty of time to do what you need to.

Dogs are great but only if you have the time and the will to take care of them. Another consideration is driveway alarms.

You have been targeted twice. It will probably happen again. Keep a gun close by even when outdoors. Have a plan and make sure your wife understands it. Rehearse the plan. Think ahead. As we get older, we can’t afford not to.

Send me a PM for more help if you like.

CB3,
Great idea about the windows!!! I didn’t know that such existed, but I’m going to check into that asap. Thx!!!
EdinDenver,
The state police mentioned the shrubs, and we’ve had them pruned waaay back from the windows. I never tho’t of the car’s panic alarm, but that’s going to be an integral part of our system now. My wife’s fired her .38 Lady Smith, and is quite comfortable with it. The Taurus Judge is at her max, but she can fire it a few times before she bails on it. I have no problem with it, however. My research indicates that .45 Colt will work well for me in the 460V, and the state police patrolmen (several of them) concurred.
Hyena,
What with the 2 attempted home incursions, and the rabid foxes in the area, we never go outside (her in the garden, me mowing that darn big lawn) without protections.
Sigp220.45,
We really enjoyed your tongue-in-cheek introductions comments. As for the rest – we concur.
Univibe,
We’re going to keep the Judge, but I’m looking at a S&W 686 L-Frame .357 revolver in a 4” barrel. I prefer stainless steel, as they’re easier to clean. Further, the .357 would/should be abit lighter than the 460V.
Loyaljeeper,

SMSgt,
A mentioned previously, our doors, door frames, are steel, with deadbolts, and pins in the hinges that go into the door, and the door frame. They’ve been reviewed, and we’re confident that they’re more than sturdy. the windows on both floors have pins that limit/restrict the amount they can be opoened. The window film, tho’, is something we didn’t know about, but something we’ll move on right away.
Gamecock,
The bar under the door handle is something we employ on the front door. The pedestrian door to the garage has cross-bars – top and bottom – so it’s secured as well. The door from the garage to the house is the same steel arrangement as the front, but to get thru the outer door to get to this second door is going to raise such a commotion that any potential intruder will be met with a “surprise”.
Muss Muggins,
Agree wholeheartedly . . .
One and all – again, all of the comments made herein by all of you have been most appreciated, and extremely informative and helpful. My wife and I can’t begin to express our appreciation to you for putting forth the effort to provide assistance to people you don’t even know. “Thank You” hardly seems adequate, but until there’s something better, it’s all we’ve got - “Thank You”!!!!!

ADDENDUM – During conversation, my wife mentioned that I should define our “physical challenges”. Well, we’re both challenged with mobility – she resultant from a meningioma (brain tumor – but it was surgically excised in its entirety) – and me from an injury to my legs while I was in the Navy. Her walking being somewhat compromised by residual weakness in one leg, and my walking any protracted distances is also an issue.

For a potential “home invasion” we have a 119 lb male European Doberman. He is very interested in everything, and just wants to protect to the extreme. We also have his sister and although she is only 65 lbs she is just as vocal and protective.

I’m sure the pups will slow down any “invaders” long enough for me, (or my wife,) to get to the MP-5 which is ready and available.

Jim

Might a 66 be more suitable than the 686, considering it’s lighter weight? If you’re not going to be doing a lot of shooting of 357, it should be plenty of gun.

I now have physical disability issues, especially mobility. No children in the home now. I have essentially decided that the master bedroom is to be a point of refuge / panic room. The door is solid & both jams reinforced as best we can. We have chosen cover positions behind heavy furniture.
We have 2 shotguns with sights, 3 revolvers which share the same ammunition & speed loaders. In a worst case, the plan is to use the "NY reload", pick up a loaded gun... not reload until everything has run dry.

I was thinking in a home invasion revolver, that doesn't have to be concealed or carried, bigger and heavier might be better. I know that my six inch 686 with full underlug has minimal recoil with .38 spl loads, which translates into easier, faster shooting. Either should be fine with .38 loadings.

In other words: If I had to depend on one of my revolvers for home protection, it'd be my 686. For carrying it would be Detective Special.

My comment on the dogs is that smaller yappers are better for older or handicapped people. I would like to have another German Shepard but I also know my legs and knees aren't up to handling a big dog anymore. It is to easy for a big dog being playful to knock me off my feet, especially if I wasn't expecting it. The liability of owning a big dog is something to consider.
A man at work told me his neighbor was beaten up and robbed. His house was only house on the block that had no dogs.
My grandmother woke up as usual one morning and noticed her bed headboard drawer was pulled out and things were missing. The intruder even took her flashlight that was in the drawer. She had no idea anyone had been standing over her while she slept in bed.
Get a small dog or at least get an alarm that sounds off when any door or window are opened.
I also suggest a handgun with a grip activated laser. Put the red spot beam on the intruder and pull the trigger. No need to see or use your gun sights.
My minimal target experience shooting the Judge I will never own one for self defense. To each his own.
My night stand drawer has a .45 Kimber 1911 with grip activated red dot laser. I also have two dogs that know when a sound isn't normal.

1. Do not keep burglary tools out for burglars to use. You wouldn’t believe how many houses have a ladder laying around back.
2. I’m almost convinced fake security cameras are as effective as real cameras. I actually have some solar lights that look like security cameras. I do have a Ring Doorbell, and I am for the most part happy with it. My wife used it the first day we had it to tell me she had just locked herself out of the house.
3. Truthfully, most doors are penetratable; it’s just a matter of how long does it take. Harden the doors with strengthened frames.
4. Lights, and more lights. Motion lights are cheaper and easier than ever. Many are solar and work well.

If you don’t want a big dog get an imaginary big dog. I am talking about the beware of dog signs with the water bowl by the door and some large dog toys laying in the back yard. However, there is not an actual dog.

This also reminds me of a single woman who went to the thrift store and bought some slightly used size 13 work boots to place by the side door. She fooled me into thinking that she actually had a man around the house. If she hadn’t told me otherwise I probabbly would have never known otherwise.

I had a motion detector outside that worked in conjunction with a switch that turned on a lamp inside. It worked ok, a few false light activations the best I could tell, but I didn’t have a wonderful spot in the house to utilize it. It made my dog get crazy when the light came on.

4T5GUY,
My wife and I love dogs, and cats. We’ve had cats without pause since 1971, and we’ve had dogs without pause from 1973 until 1998. We want to get one now, but what with a move to the mid-west in the semi-near future, we’re not convinced this is the right time. We’ve seen some sweet dobies, but they may be abit much for us.
Jeppo,
Agreed . . .
Flagman1776,
Sounds as tho’ we’ve got a lot in common. Our “invasion response” plans are very similar, altho’ we don’t have quite the arsenal you appear to have.
Univibe,
Agreed . . . altho’, I’m going to go with a 4” barrel.

Our heart-felt thanks to all of you for your comments/suggestions/support. Warmest regards . . .

Young man, the grownups are talking. Why don't you run along and play with the other kids on the AR Forums?

Also, you don't have to use four spaces between sentences, one will suffice.

Nobody wants to be hit with a frying pan.

Shoot .45 Colt in your Judge for self defense. .410 is for snakes.

Do you honestly think that .410 Buckshot isn't lethal? Go watch some tests on YouTube, plenty of things from simulated medium to living tissue has been shot with it by now to show that even out of a handgun it can be highly effective, so there's really no excuse to be saying such ignorant things by now.

No, stop writing a lame attempt at a comeback, go to YouTube, watch some video, then you won't have to make anymore embarrassing, ignorant statements in the future nor attempt to save face by attempting to defend said ignorant statements afterwards.
