Three years ago on a business trip I saw this pristine Remington 17 for just under $400 at a small gun shop, and arranged to have it shipped to my local FFL. Some call the Remington 17 the finast pump shotgun ever made.

It is also one of the most beautiful field grade shotguns of any stripe, even compared to a Winchester 21:

Nice, I've never used one but some of those older pumps are great guns. My first pump shotgun was an Ithaca 37, also not a bad choice. My candidate for best inexpensive gun though is my PMR 30. A couple years ago no one could have convinced me I'd be voting for a Kel Tec product for anything but this little 22 Mag with its 30 round capacity is a very good product for under $400.

I don't have it anymore, but I had a Rossi 357mag snubby, blued, got it real nice and cheap, and that thing was awesome. Really accurate. Hair single action trigger.

Hi Point 9mm Carbine

Eats everything I feed it, tons of fun and who cares if a new shooter drops it.

Or my LCP Custom. Sold my original LCP, took the proceeds and only $25 more to upgrade to the Custom.

The gun that came immediately to mind was one of my .30-06s. It was a light weight Krico (Kriegeskorte & Co., Stuttgart, Germany) bolt action imported by Trade Winds in Tacoma Washington. I found it, not surprisingly, in the largest gun store in downtown Tacoma. I do not recall the price, only that I would gladly have paid it for the Leupold Vari-X 2-7X that was on it without even the rings.

It used single column box magazines which are my favorite. WA law forbids loaded long guns in vehicles. Flat magazines fit in a shirt pocket for quick loading as I step out deer hunting. I stumbled onto a gun show table holder who was selling a whole tightly packed crate of them. The crate was about the size of an apple box. He wanted to sell the whole crate. We settled on me buying twenty of them for a buck apiece. Not bad considering that before finding him I doubted that I'd ever find one.

After refinishing with linseed oil its walnut looked great. For some inexplicable reason, despite its light barrel, it was not heat sensitive. My most memorable group was shot with Lyman #311284 home cast 220 grain gas check bullets, 10 in 1 1/2" at 200 yards.

If not for a criminal I'd still have it.

Going with the Mouse Gun.
It’s the cheapest gun I’ve bought in a long time and I do like it!

Remington Speedmaster 552 BDL, early 80's manufacture. Very lightly used. Claimed to have only been shot about 20 times. From the way it looked it was plausible.

$250 in 2012.

Beautiful gun you have there! Nice wood and the wood to metal fit is awesome. Real quality build back then. Mine maybe my old Model Rem.700 that cost me around $300 way back. Nice walnut and mirror polish bluing.

I picked up a used police trade-in GP100 3" about 15yrs ago for 200$ at my LGS....
One of the most accurate revolvers I've owned...I carry it often

It's second on my all time list (just behind my grandfather's Chief's Special 36 )

I bought this Colt's Agent at a local gun shop maybe 15 years ago.
If my memory is right I think I paid about 250 for it.
At first I thought of it as just a poor man's Detective Special,
but the more I shot it, the more I liked it. And it's a couple
of ounces lighter than the Dick Sp.

I bobbed the hammer spur and removed the single action notch from
the sear to render it DAO. I invested in the Craig Spegel extended
boot grips shown in photo.

I like my guns to be dressed well, so here are a few of it's favorite
holsters. Left to Right

2nd from left is KD's gator trimmed pancake.

3rd from left is Black Hills lizard high ride pancake.

4th from left is TJ's chestnut gator pancake.

5th is PWL's (Price Western Leather) 120TS.

So, the initial investment was not expensive,
but I guess the accessories made it kinda
expensive.

It's been a couple decades ago but in a local gun shop I found an original Trapdoor carbine for $125. When I took it to the counter I fully expected the dealer to say "Oops, I left a zero off that price!". All he did was smile and say "That's an oldie there." I didn't feel sorry for the dealer but I did feel sorry for whoever traded it in.

I bought a tiny plastic gun about 30 years ago. Everybody laughed. That little gun has followed me faithfully and bagged many varmints. It cost me $185 brand new. P32 by Kel-Tec. Hands down best gun per round fired I've ever bought.

Never heard of a Rem model 17, so I have to reserve judgement on it..as it would be pretty much impossible for me to dethrone the Win model 12 as best pump ever made, seeing as I have thousands of rounds through mine over the last 45 years and enjoyed every shot.

Best gun that was not expensive? There was a hex receiver 91/30 given to me by a church member. There was a little single-shot Rossi .223 rifle - routinely shot MOA w/ several brands of factory ammo. There was a S&W four inch 686. Cost $100. Someone had filed down the front sight. There is (operative word ... "is") a 336 Marlin "Waffle Top" given to me by a church member. It dates from the early 1950's. It has maybe 30% finish. Forearm held on with a nail (since removed). Buttstock repaired w/ glue/dowel/screw years ago. Keeps five shots inside 2 inches at about 70 yds. firing from the kneeling position. Sincerely. bruce.
