Model 617

I have put thousands of rounds through my 617-6 6". Very nice trigger with a 13# rebound spring and extremely accurate. My ancient eyes demand a red dot sight.

Thanks to all for your valuable inputs and images of some awesome revolvers. Placed my order with my LGS on Friday and now just need to wait for my NJ purchase permit approval (up to 30 days but hopefully 3 weeks). I really envy those of you in the states that are less restrictive with regard to hand gun purchases. Guns & Ammo Magazine ranked the states in a recent article and NJ was at the bottom of the barrel (number 50 - NY was 51). If our Gov. has his way we will become even more restrictive.

My only con so far with the 617 is the Good Years. Thinking of swapping out for some Altamont rosewood checkered targets which will also fit my 586-8. Does this sound like a good choice?

Thanks again,

Lew

As for shooting I don't think any wood compare to rubber grips. Rubber are far and away the best option, even in 22 lr.

Aesthetically, no question wood is the way to go. While I can be rather vane when it comes to my guns, all of mine are shooters first and have rubber options for all and only 1 wood swapping grip.

Check out Ahrends for nice wood options.

I have both the 4" and 6" with Hogue black rubber grips. Can't go wrong either way. I prefer the 4".
Hey Mr. Green are those barrels original? Been thinking about a 6" barrel with no lug.

Yes, they are the real deal.:)

Ashland Shooting Supply special order guns in 1991.

200 4" guns
116 6" guns

Is the no lug barrel also a 617 ?
Looks like a stainless model 17, which would be a 617 ?
I thought all the 617's had lugs.

Picked up my new 617-6 yesterday

Have not been to the range with it yet but will this weekend. Not sure I like the all black patridge front sight and black rear sight. Used to the red ramp on my 586-8 (that I painted white) and white outline rear. Found this combination to help in the low light conditions at my range.
Fit and finish of the new revolver appears to be excellent as expected from a Smith. DA trigger a bit heavy. Not real fond of the synthetic grips but admit they are comfortable. Not an issue with low recoil 22lr but I will try them on my 586-8 with hot .357s.

Mine was made for the engineer who made this gun and the ten round cylinder. My gun has the ten round cylinder. Have the 6 round cylinder and hardware to swap it over.

Model 617 - firing 22 shorts

Anyone have experience firing 22 shorts in their 617? I have three boxes of vintage Remington Hi-Speed Kleanbore that I am planning to shoot.Manual states that 22S & L may be fired (revolvers only) as well as LR. Ammo appears to be in very good condition upon visual inspection. Has been in my attic since 1978 and my father's hardware store many years before that.

Regards,

Lew
