Preventing rust in a safe.

Kel tec #110 or #105 PURE silicone. Mfgd in Sandusky , Ohio. Treat an 8" square of REAL lambswool with silicone, and wipe down gun. Why REAL lambs wool?? Because the fibers get into everywhere. I buy in 10 oz. cans. Usually in hardware stores. Can is red, gold, black letters and white top. If you find it in a 4 oz can that says silicone, it is the #110 ( I called factory). I have used this product and method since 1969.

No problems ever

Just an update we have had rain last few days.

Gun room is sitting at 75% humidity

with a 15w heater and 1/2lb size damprid container in there have been sitting at about 65/66% humidity.

Through maybee 2-3lb of silcia gel (enough to fill a 1.25l/40oz coke bottle easy) in a bra bag or whatever you want to call it. Now im sitting at 55% after 2hrs and still dropping

I also have a 5 gal bucket (12.5kg or 26lbish) full of the stuff which is used so ill dry that out asap. 120c in oven for as long as it takes pretty much.

The stuff im using is omni-tuff e-gel 09-seg 2-5mm orange to green gel.

Safe Storage of Firearms

Been using RIG, light coat, on collection of safe queens for years. Was using silica gel packs, as well, but switched to Goldenrod. No problems at all. Live in humid Florida climate during summers. Would suggest using RIG if firearms stored for longer periods of non-use. A coat of any good lubricating oil for guns if storage periods short. Everything metal must be coated. Your rust could simply be a spot where lubricant missing. I store everything open with no Gunsocks or bags around each piece.

Go with the VCI emitter pack. Back when I worked for a large electrical enclosure manufacturer we sold VCI emitter packs to go inside electrical enclosure used on oil platforms to prevent corrosion of components inside the box - works like a charm. This is the same technology used in VCI bags which the military has used for everything from rifles to tanks.

My 15w heater acts as a golden rod. As that’s all what those golden rod heater devices are. Instead of paying $100 for a golden rod and $50 for a 120/240 step down transformer. I simply used a reptile heater.

I don’t have “that” many guns and all are in regular use Eg there are no collector/family heirlooms. My only war issue gun is a isserali k98 Mauser that gets used for a military shoot I do approx once every 2 months.

I have no doubt it only rusted cause it was bumped in the safe or similar.

We have those vci emitters at work as well but are kind of useless in a safe. They only work in close range. Even the larger one in that link is rated for 15cubic feet meaning I’d need 4.

The zerust modules even that largest one has 2ft range.

No one has mentioned what I use yet, so I'll throw it out there for you. I have a small magnetic hygrometer to keep track of humidity ( I just stick it on my shelf tracks )and a rechargeable Eva-Dry pack. I have the bigger one of the small packs they offer , more than my safe needs but the smaller one is close to capacity with my safe size. In the winter it has gotten down to 25% ( forced air heat so the house gets dry ) . In the summer it stays between 50-55% with our humidity ( anywhere from 70-95% most of the time ) . Anything I don't often shoot has a coat of ren wax on it, and the ones that do get shot get wiped down with an oiled rag when I put them away.

The Eva-Dry gets taken out and plugged in to recharge ( it just plugs into an outlet and heats itself to dry it out ) maybe 3 times a winter and once a month in the summer. It has crystals that are blue when dry and turn pink when they get saturated with moisture.

The hygrometer was maybe $10 and the Eva-Dry was $25 or so if I remember right.

I use this as well and it works great. It's very cost effective and drying out the contents is as simple as leaving it plugged in for 24 hours. The Daioy Shooter YouTube channel did a review recently. Find that here

Shoot all your guns more often, cleaning and wet lubing afterwards - good to go ;)

I try to buy some guns such as my big bore handguns 4 x 44mag, 45 Acp and 45/70 bfr I can only shoot once per month at the gun range. Even if I had 10000 acres would be illegal for me to shot ANY handguns one.

Yea welcome to Australia.

My heart aches for you

Then a paintball gun or air rifle falls under the same class as 5 round lever or over under shot gun and bolt 22lr

10 round limits on a pump/bolt action Center fire.

No semi auto long guns (including 22lr) unless you need it to earn an income and then the vast majority of your income must come from it. Eg you can’t have a hobby farm and try to get a 10/22.

Let’s say I do have a large property and im a full time farmer. I can have 1 semi auto Center fire (I’m I’m lucky) do I go a ar15 for culling small Varmin or a larger one for pigs ect ect. Then let’s say I want to take it to the range to sight it in. Noooope as it’s registured for primary production only.

Same state have an appearance laws. If it’s looks miltarty it’s cat d (darn impossible to get) 1911’s, Mauser, 303 are fine apparently.

Stock rem 700 ok
Rem 700 factory tac chassis not ok.
Paint the tac chassis bright pink then it’s ok.

Folding/adjustable stocks are a no go in some states. Ruger precession ect ect. I personally got a Ruger precession rimfire to teach my kids how to shoot. That’s banned in some states (stock must be pinned)

Pay $30us every time I want a new gun and get approval for it. I have semi auto handguns, 308 bolt actions ect ect but hang on let’s get permission to get a break open gamo air rifle.

Your laws may not be perfect but I 100% admit I have limited knowledge on it and can’t jusge but I hope you don’t go our way.

I’m all for harsher penalties for doing the wrong ****. But why treat law abiding people’s like crims.

I got a mouth full from one cop after he asked me did I have anything in the car. I said yea half a dozen or so semi auto guns behind the seat. He walks of checks license then came back in a big huf cause I didn’t make it clear enough I was serious about the guns.

My safe is in a walk in closet. Humidity is high in my area. I run a dehumidifier and I also use cat litter made with silica gel to absorb moisture inside the closed safe. I have a curtain closing off the closet which makes a big difference in air flow into or out of the room. I empty the humidifier about every three days or more depending whether I am running my home central air or not. I don't have any rust problems with handguns or rifles. Many of my guns have been in this safe for over 10 years now.

I have several of my 'once in a while' shooters in a small Sentry Safe in my cellar. I put a very thin coat of oil on them and stick each in an old sock that I have worn holes into. The cellar is about 1600 sq ft. I run two big de-humidifiers 24/7. The de-humidifiers are emptied 2 times daily. My long guns are stored in their carry cases. The humidity stays around 50%. So far so good.
