Looking for a good Custer biography.

So, I'm reading through Crazy Horse and Custer by Stephen Ambrose and it does appear to be what I was looking for because it's filling in a lot of missing details on Custer's West Point years and his Civil War years.

FWIW Stephen Ambrose cites Jay Monaghan's

Custer:The Life of General George Armstrong Custer

As THE definitive biography. So I may have to check that out when I'm done reading his book.

The Army I was in had a solution for officers who didn't care how many casualties their outfit took. Does the word 'frag' ring a bell?

Patton said something along the lines of: I don't want you men to die for your country; I want to make the other guys die for their country.

Battle hardened troops in the jungle..... and dumb arrogant butter bars... what could go wrong?

Custer's career before the LBH is well-documented and in my memory, which has to go a few decades back in this case, Monaghan does a good job. But just like Ambrose, whose book is from 1975, anything about the battle itself reflects the notions of the pre-evidence era.
