Reminds me of several trips on the Union Pacific's "City of Los Angeles" from Omaha to LA back in the '50s Great memories of glamorous train travel.

Train travel certainly has a nostalgic, romantic quality to it. There's an interesting article on its decline here. I had English friends who took CN (Canadian National) from Vancouver BC up through the Fraser Canyon & the Rockies to Banff back in the 1980s and it was the highlight of their trip.

English Comedy duo, Flanders & Swann did an unusually sombre remembrance of the decline of rail travel back in the 1960s with their song "The Slow Train", lamenting the closure of railway stations and the passing of a way of life. You can hear it here:

Terrific video and rendition by Arlo.

I also like Willie Nelson's version of the song, which can be heard here:

I love the romance of old-time train travel. The last time my wife and I took a train trip was on the rail line between Williams, Arizona and the south rim of the Grand Canyon about 15 years ago. That line was founded by Buckey O'Neill not long before he joined the Rough Riders as a captain and was shot and killed before the San Juan Heights in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Today, a classic steam engine pulls a train loaded with open-air passenger cars, and travelers are treated to live cowboy music and faux train robbers!

So many features of the past can no longer be experienced, or are hard to be experienced by modern-day folks, and that's a shame. Great train rides warm the soul.

Some songs never go away, they are always just a thought away. Some times good , sometimes bad they bring memories that seem just like yesterday. I seem to have more of those the older I get. There are no do overs just what ifs.
