Worst Recoiling Handgun You Own

I had a M-29-2 with 6-1/2" barrel and its recoil was not bad. Just don't lock your elbows, grip the gun hard and let the barrel rise up in the air. Recoil did not bother me at all but the muzzle blast was annoying even with muffs on. The worse recoiling gun was a Keltec Pf-9, 15 ounce skinny little 9m/m. The gun didn't really seem to kick that bad but after 2 magazines my hand would be numb and I would have to set it down and shoot something else for a while.

What's the best recoiling gun, for it's size and power?

Always fun to flip the question.

Model 69 4.25". Full power 44 magnum didn't hurt worse than from a 629 4", even though the gun is 7 oz lighter. The lower bore axis thing has some truth to it wrt felt recoil.

I've noticed that too- my 69 is a lot more fun than the 629 I had previously.

Full load 357s in one of my J Frames.
The guns are relatively light, the grips are small and the recoil is uncomfortable!
So I mostly load them with 38 +P.

Worst I own is a 454 Casull custom Super Blackhawk by Reeder (5" barrel). First two shots will go into an inch at 10 yards=then I start to flinch. By that time, I figure either me or the bear is dead! My 454 Raging Bull was quite pleasant!

Worst I've ever shot was a 45 LC derringer. Real thumb breaker!

T/C Contender with a 14" .357 Herrett barrel. It's only a .38 you might say! But.... There's something about the high velocity, heavy slugs and the Contender geometry that hurts. My arm stings from palm to elbow. It's no fun whatsoever!

Encore with 460 barrel was most unpleasant. Sold the barrel. Now I would say the Taurus .454 Raging Bull is probably the worst to me, but then again, I do push some pretty high end loads through it. The muzzle blast of the Taurus just smacks you in the face and since the recoil is straight back instead of up, it really jars your hand and wrist. Seems worst than the Encore with .270.

For me it is the Contender with 10" barrel and .223 round. My wife dubbed it the "handcannon". She shot it once and and said no thank you.

That is perceived recoil. The .223 contender doesn't kick much at all. However, it is loud and has a significant muzzle blast that makes some shooters think it kicks bad. I changed powders and starting loading a faster burning powder, H322, and it cut down the blast and gained a little bit of velocity. Made a big difference. It is probably the most pleasant shooting of my contender barrels.

My .445 super mag contender has to be the worst. You have to hold the gun so the trigger guard doesn't get you.

Even my 10.5 inch PC 500 doesn't seem to recoil as bad.

Try a TC Contender in .30-30 Ackley Improved... With proper ammo, the gun will shoot dime sized groups at 50 yards, however the recoil is sharp and very painful . Not a fun gun at the range!

I found my limit with the .454 SBH. With JHP you can feel the torque of the rifling while your wrist is getting whacked. It's pretty brutal.

.44 Mag is a popgun by comparison.

This one pictured here, RIA 10mm. I have several 10mm pistols and I enjoy the round in my big S&W's, a EAA Witness and a Delta Elite. I thought buying this RIA with the rail would allow me to continue enjoying shooting the 10mm with a 1911 platform without beating up my Colt. Wrong! Every time you pulled the trigger it was like someone hit the web of your hand with a iron bar, as if you were holding your hand up while trying to stop someone from beating you with the bar! I tried changing my grip, gloves, to no avail. I sent it down the road a little while ago, I even tried selling it here. Nicely made pistol, good fit and finish, but man did it kick!

Well, after I dumped my 3" Model 629 (a *****cat with .44 Specials, I admit that, but .44 Magnum was ridiculous) I guess it was my Model 638. No way it was really controllable and I generally say that recoil does not bother me. So, since that gun is gone, it is probably my Model 642, which is why I carry a Model 649. World of difference between lightweight and all steel!!!

See my notes in my album - I THOUGHT those thick, pink Hogues would tame it. I was wrong.

I really like that 642 - I carried it for years! But the difference between it and the 649 at the range totally overcame the difference between those two in my pocket so the 649 won the day.

This lone Eagle in .444 marlin is the worst I own or have ever owned.
The recoil is extreme.

I fired a friend's Lone Eagle in .30-06. Once. :D

My worst would probably be my 442 with +P's.
