Moving to New House

I spent 3 years in the Army, then 38 years with GM and Chrysler; moved 14 times, designed and built 4 homes from scratch, including the last one, our retirement home, which we built when I retired in 2001. The only way we're leaving this one is in rubber bags.

Congratulations! Enjoy that beautiful new home and the wonderful view!

Next time I move, it will be into a pine box. I hate moving.

I'm in my forever home, which I helped design. I've always said the only way I'm leaving this place is in a straightjacket or feet first.

I'm with you guys. My wife and I moved into our present house in 1979 and both said it was our last move. She passed away earlier this year and I figure I'll leave the same way at some point in time.

I once counted up all the places I have lived. Think it was 26. That's before I bought this place, though.

Lovely home there, Protected One. Congrats!

I Feel Your Pain

First, best of luck in your new home. And yes, had I known sooner that I was moving I would have attempted to shoot off those 500-round boxes of lead .45 ACP bullets. Even my modest collection of long guns proved to be a chore. Despite the Firearms Owners Protection Act, my trip from Long Island NY to North Carolina required that I cross rabid anti-gun territory. The guns and ammo were moved over several trips by POV, being sure not to attract the attention of the local police. On one trip where I moved the handguns, we spent an overnight in Virginia. the handguns were in a rolling suitcase which we brought up to our hotel room rather than risk leaving them in the car for an overnight. The trips with the long guns were non-stop except for fuel and bathroom breaks.

My last move was memorable....
House sales were WAAAY down during the real estate crash when we started trying to sell in 2008, and it took around 5 years for it to sell.
During that time, all guns/ammo/loading equipment, etc was placed in climate-controlled storage not far from our intended destination.

Well, it took ~2.5 more years to finally arrive at our current home.
Now, during that time, I retired and my first two 'retirement jobs' were at (consecutively) two different LGS's. One handled many estates per year.

I used those years and opportunities to gather an awful lot of ammo and yes, guns, and yes, many older S&W's.
Most of it went into the storage unit, knowing the day would come when it would be enjoyed.

About 2016, got into our present home, established a BR as strictly a 'me room' and unloaded the storage unit via numerous trips with my pickup.
I'd used mostly old milk crates for ammo and component storage.
Do you know how HEAVY a steel milk crate is filled with cast pistol bullets??
Stored brass had to be organized/stored in an outdoor shop building - no room inside.

But - a great feeling once it's all done.

Congrats and enjoy your new place.

Nice...my wife and I are 8-1/2 years from retirement. Your view is awesome.
We just spent last summer building the 1st of 2 buildings on our retirement property in NC. Congratulations....
Here is our property...check out creek behind house.
We are truly blessed

Despite my current age, I have only owned 2 houses in my life. The one I'm in now I helped design, and from the start it was intended to be my forever home. My late mother was the inspiration to put in a lot of handicap/senior citizen amenities, which came in handy when I had my knee surgery 2 years ago. I tell everybody there are only 2 ways I'm going to leave this house, in a straight jacket or feet first.

We just finished the first half of our "retirement home" on a 300 acre lake in the laurel highlands of Pa. Some call it a "barn".....my wife calls it a "Carriage House".
While it looks like an 18th Century Pa. red dairy barn from the outside..... there's a 900 sq ft two bedroom apt on the second floor.

Our lake place for now we will add a house/home in a couple of years when we plan to leave our "Burg of the Burgh" where we've been for 26 years.

I'm realizing how much "stuff" one can accumulate in 26 years and two kids!

This thread got me digging through my "stacks of stuff".......as George Carlin would say....................26 years in the same house....... while living through the......................

1994-2004 Assault Weapons Ban,..................
The world will end panic of Y2K..............................
9-11 and it's aftermaths................
The "Panics" of 2008,2012 and Sandyhook in 2013,..................
The .22lr "buy when....make that "if"........ you can find it" years..................

Having the disposable income to take advantage of way to many "too good
to pass up buys" while traveling around the rural parts of Penn's Woods
where every small town has a Hospital (clients) and at least 2 or 3 guns
shops.

Throw in the "Big Boxes of holsters" and extra magazines........and

All the other assorted "stuff" one all needs to shoot PPC,USPSA and IDPA over the years........................
not to mention hunting gear...............

This will be a move to remember.................................... maybe not fondly :D

Sounds familiar.

If you go back for your Homecoming next year stop at the gun shop Morris Muzzleloading on Route 58 heading toward Mercer. Nice folks running it and good prices on some components.

Change the locks.

That was done before we even moved in!
The previous owner said they weren't changed when she bought it because the area is so safe that they were not concerned. Nor did they have the security system activated, again, because they weren't concerned.
I'm not concerned either...because the area is relatively safe, the locks are changed, security system in place, and back up sits on my hip or night stand. ;)

In addition to all the good advice and best wishes above, let me say that whatever space and capacity you allot for a gun safe - at least double it before you really get started. Peace in your new home.

Way ahead of you sir! I have a LARGE space (5' wide) dedicated to a new safe, and am looking forward to it being installed.

We've been in the house for a month now and it's amazing how many small things need to be done to make a house 'perfectly your own', but by mid-spring I think we should be in pretty good shape.
