Luxury Watches

I've never considered a Seiko dive watch to be a luxury watch.

Just because they're expensive doesn't mean they are. The price reflects the quality and collectability. Lots of guys wearing them down here. 90% that do probably never dive.

I've seen a lot of "knock off" Rolex's over the years and no matter how good they looked one familiar with them could tell at a close glance they were fakes. An original Rolex has a mechanical movement with a sweep second hand and the fakes have electric movements where the second hand moves in one second jerks.
Jim

The better Rolex fakes have mechanical movements as well.

Not to mention, the best fakes have mechanical movements that closely resemble the original movement at first examination! It takes a horologist to determine its authenticity sometimes now. The movement is no longer the litmus test anymore.
Can you tell the difference between the fake Omega Calibre 861 movement and the real one?
One of these are fake and the other is legit, if they weren't labeled when you hover over them I doubt it, I couldn't.

Here is your fake. But it wasn't made in China.

Edit. I was feeling really proud of my knowledge. But when I attached the photo I had saved I noticed it was called fake.

an add on to my previous post

On this fake I would not even bother to see the movement. Just look at that serial number on the lug.

Speaking of luxury watches... seen the news lately? Look at this;

A one-of-a-kind Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime Ref. 6300A sold for a hammer price of CHF 31-million ($31,117,400)

The CHF 31-million Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime reference 6300A-010 was created specially for Only Watch, and it is the only one that will ever be made in stainless steel. It has four spring barrels driving 20 complications, including a grande and petite sonnerie, a minute repeater, instantaneous perpetual calendar with a four-digit year display, second time zone, day/night indicator, day/date (on both dials), month, leap-year cycle, four-digit year display and 24-hour and minute subdial.

The Only Watch auction has been held biennially since 2005, with 100% of proceeds going to benefit research towards a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy

Wow, three pages of posts and nobody has mentioned Zenith? Maybe you've only heard of those old TV's by the same name. In fact, issues with that trademark are the reason this brand wasn't marketed in the U.S. for many years. Zenith has been producing extremely accurate timepieces since the 1860's, and are one of the few Swiss watchmakers who still manufacture their own movements. At 36,000 bph, their El Primero is arguably the most accurate mechanical movement in production. It was actually used by Rolex in their Daytona model for several years. I've got a few Swiss "luxury" watches, but my Zenith El Primero Class 4 Chronograph would probably be the last to go.
Good shootin',
Doug

My every day watch is the Omega Seamaster (James Bond timepiece) we paid round $1300 for many years ago.

+1 for Omega Seamaster. This is my one and only piece of "man jewelry". I'm so old school that I wear it daily... actually feel undressed without a wristwatch.

Mine is an automatic - wind from the 1960's, so a little old for James Bond.

No Seamaster here, but I do have an old Omega "Geneva" from the 70's with the 631 movement, totally manual. I'm like you, I don't wear jewelry at all even a ring, I do feel "naked" without a watch on though.

My Rolex, bought in Geneva in 1985, wore it pretty much 24/7 till I retired it about 2008 for an easier to see/read Timex Expedition, about $30.00. From the picture you can see it has been well used, the band was re built twice, a bunch of $$ each time.
My Sons asked when I'll be passing it on to one of them I told them jokingly "I want to be cremated wearing it" you should have seen the look on their faces!

That's the problem, who you gonna leave one expensive watch to without pissing off the other kids? You'll need to get a luxury watch per child to leave as an inheritance. lol

Such fine watches!

Have been following this thread and meaning to post pix of my two primary timepieces. As much as I like them, they pale in comparison to those posted before me. I am rather envious.

The Tissot pocket watch was a gift from a former love...about 45 years ago. It has stopped and am planning to get it repaired.

Bought the Raymond Weil about 20 years ago. It needed a new crystal and some factory 'official' maintenance about a year ago. $500. was money well spent...I think.

Looking to acquire an Omega or Rolex (or similar) in the near future. One of the reason I bought the Raymond Weil was that I believe all leather worn must match...to include watchbands, holsters, shoes, etc.; no need to switch leather bands with a two-tone metal band. :) New watch will have a metal band, for sure.

Have gotten several ideas from you watch aficionados. THANK YOU!

Be safe.
