2020 Colt Python

Rick Grimes with Python:

I’ll wager a huge portion of new Python buyers are going to have been first turned on to the big Colt snake gun from the Walking Dead television series. That’s not a bad thing. Hoping many of them enjoy the revolver and learn to shoot it well. This could spur a real resurgence in revolver usage from youth shooters.

Personally, and I know many of you here will either not understand this or laugh, but I first fell in love with the Python not from the Walking Dead, but the 2004 video game Half-Life 2. In that game, it’s a very powerful handgun you can use to defeat the cyborg alien overlords that have taken over the planet. I’d link a video to it but the game contains blood and is violent, probably against the forum standards for sure.

Cue the nerd alert! But seriously, what’s really the difference in modern TV/movies or games when many people here were first turned on to Smith & Wesson’s from Dirty Harry, or the Colt Peacemaker from the westerns of the 50s and 60s? Hollywood and the entertainment industry have a powerful effect on us. I’m all for more people owning revolvers and enjoying them, no matter from where they were first introduced to them. Without these media I highly doubt we’d be talking about a new Python right now to begin with.
My gun posted earlier is the only Python I’ve ever owned or even held in my hand at that time. But until recent years I wished it was 6” blued. You know, just like Starsky’s pal “Hutch” carried and Don Johnson in a movie called “Dead Bang” I think. And let’s not forget “Rudy” in “The Getaway”, though he used a Colt Trooper at the end.

I’m going to have to buy one after all the excitement wears off and it’s proven to work. I used to own several Pythons and sold them all.

Upon further review, I'd rather get a 610. Amazingly, the N-frame weighs the same as a Python for the barrel length and it''s got more punch.

Seems like Colt has addressed all the issues that had always stopped me from buying one in the past when they were priced only $150 more than a Smith & Wesson. Also thank God they didn't go with the the fiber optic sights , and stuck with traditional ones.:)

I really hope Colt makes it this time. I just got sick of the constant bankruptcies, reorganizations, etc. Even though I'm a Smith guy, I might be tempted to try one of these, especially a 6 inch blued one. Then maybe an older Colt, like an OP or OMM. Then I'd be a "revolver" guy, not just a Smith guy.

It's really quite amazing that Colt still exists after all that it has gone through with greedy corporate raiders and, as a result, staggering debt almost beyond the imagination. Then comes the Chapter 11 bankruptcy and then emerges a "new" company with a new leader... one that came from Ruger. Suddenly, we are seeing new products that might actually sell and produce a profit! ;) :D

I think a good or better condition OP (Official Police) is a great buy if you are in the market for a Colt revolver. I was fortunate to buy mine (a 1956 model) at an estate auction about five years ago. I rate it at 95%. It is tight as a drum and a great shooter. The only Colt revolver I own. Got it for $395 OTD!! The OP was built of the Colt I frame which is a little larger than the S&W K frame (see picture). The Python was built on the E frame which is same as I except firing pin is not on hammer. Colt stopped making the OP in 1969. Like the looks of new Python but $1400 is not in my budget.

Called a few shops in my area, and they didn't even know the new Python was out yet.

Saw this on Colt's website. Have they always only offered a 1 year warranty?

Same here. I called half the gun shops in the city and nobody had any in stock and most acted as if they had no idea there were new Pythons.

I have two older Pythons. 4" and 6" both blue. This new one looks real good. The tiny QR thing doesn't bother me a bit. Big deal. It's tiny. And I think the stocks look good too. Different strokes ya know. But if you don't like the stocks, I think they are inter changeable.

I still need to know the action has been improved, to hold timing much better.

A very famous pistolsmith told a friend of mine that he could re--time his Python, but it'd be out of time again in 500-1,000 rounds! Ruger and S&W revolvers are far better in that regard.

Yep Colt has confirmed it uses any Python grips, holsters are compatible as well for the 6” variant. Some holsters for 4” guns might not work with the new 4.25” variant. The extra bit of barrel had to be added so the gun could be sold in Canada.

Not to derail the conversation but I'm curious, what Smith and Wesson frame is the Python frame comparable to?

Karl

L frame. For a time there were custom guns built on S&W L-frames using Python barrels. They were called "Smythons," IIRC.

The Model 586 was virtually the same dimensions
as the Python.

I know of at least one Arlington Heights, IL, LEO
back then who replaced his Python with the 586.
The price was too attractive and the Smith fit
his current "Python" leather.

Or Pyth and Wythons.

Checking Gunbroker for the new Pythons, and they are selling for in excess of $3000 on there. Insane!

Saw one buy it now for $3,499.00.

One has 34 bids and it's up to $2,025 with 3 days to go.

I want a 4.25" one, but I'm not gonna pay over MSRP.

Could have bought a older 4" blued one listed as 98% a couple weeks ago for $1,650. It was on Florida Gun Trader. Didn't last long.
