2020 Colt Python

Not to derail the conversation but I'm curious, what Smith and Wesson frame is the Python frame comparable to?

Karl
S&W L-frame and Ruger GP-100, holster makers tend to offer holsters in a size that will accommodate all three as they are very close in external dimensions.

I still need to know the action has been improved, to hold timing much better.

A very famous pistolsmith told a friend of mine that he could re--time his Python, but it'd be out of time again in 500-1,000 rounds! Ruger and S&W revolvers are far better in that regard.
I have a 4” Python made in 1972. It has over 25k rounds through it. Probably 15k .38 special and 10k full bore .357 mag. Timing is as spot on as day it was bought new. I’ve also owned a 6” and 8” that were shot pretty hard and never had a timing issue. My gunsmith is one of the most respected smiths in the country and he agrees that a Colt will get out of time more than a S&W but thinks the timing issues with Pythons are exaggerated.

I have never owned a Python . I did buy an OM Trooper in 357 , 4" last yr for $475 . It's built on the same frame as a Python and has the same internals . It lacks the fancy barrel and the lustrous finish . It was in really great shape , LNIB . It dated back to " 67 " . It's a keeper , especially for the price . The new Pythons , yes I would probably love to have one as well . Make mine the 4.25" barrel in stainless . Regards, Paul
I bought a 6” Old Trooper with exposed extractor and target stocks for $275 in the mid 80s. I later sold it and still miss it as much as I like my Python I still own.

*Cough* Walther PPK. How many of those have been sold because of a certain fictional Brit spook?

Well, I'm not ashamed (ok...maybe a little) to admit Lethal Weapon was a factor when I got my first gun, a Beretta 92FS.

And I may, or may not, have tried Riggs' "shooting while rolling across the ground" technique (shooting safely downrange, of course), with the instructor looking at me funny...

Well, as the owner of an original 4" nickeled Python, and reading all the whoopee about the new one, I was all set to consider getting one.

That is until I determined that the new Colt does NOT have something that S&W revolvers have seen fit to install on most of of their currently-manufactured guns, making them easily light years ahead of the competition!

This glaring deficiency on the Colt is a real deal-breaker for me, and I'm sure for most of you other loyal S&W fans....

The new Colt does NOT have that beautiful hole in the side of the frame for an internal lock!!!! How could they ever introduce a new revolver without such a pivotal and essential component??? I am, my friends, AGHAST at the omission of that marvelous, necessary and eye-catching feature that we have all grown to love and admire on new S&W revolvers. Not having "the hole" will surely sound the death knell for the new Python. I can't believe Colt's management would let this happen! Surely S&W's patent has expired by now, and there is no excuse for Colt not to pick up the ball on this device and run with it! I mean, what the H! I am so disappointed!

As most of you know, I am a great fan of "the hole" and this omission by Colt really set me back on my heels. For them to be so fundamentally oblivious to the incredible advantage of having a hole in the side of their new Python, well, it's beyond belief! So sad...

I'll wait 6-8 months.Time to work the bugs out if any and price to drop under MSRP. I bought a new cobra as soon as they were available and paid $700. now you can get a new one for $575

Went to local store today. They haven’t received any new pythons. Expect to get some. Sale price is ...... are you ready?......$1799.99. I think I’m out on this new snake gun. At least til the new wears off

thats just your lgs. Colt is listing msrp as $1499. i we t to order one today at my local good duys lgs amd looked at their distributor’s page. wholesale was $1249. If they come out in decent numbers, and they should since they newly tooled to do it, i dont think we will be seeing big premiums.

The gun’s been out for 3 days... wait 3 months and you’ll be able to find it for less than MSRP. People were paying close to $1,000 on gunbroker for the new Cobra the first couple of days. That didn’t last long.

Cheapest on gunbroker is $1775. Insane IMO

Guess I should have caveated gb. Heck a 3” python sold for $75k there a few weeks ago. So if was one of 15...still nothing but 3” 357. Strange opinions of value on gb if you ask me.

Just remember, guns are a store of value, not an investment.

If you want an investment, get rental properties and/or contact your stockbroker.

All the guys complaining that Pythons were only $300 in 198X seem to forget inflation. You could buy a nice new car for $10k back then too.

I'll be buying mine to shoot, enjoy, and hand down to whatever kid isn't going to immediately sell it. One is already a wheelgun fan so that shouldn't be hard.

Remember reading (years ago); but IIRC, some folks who had 'slugged" their barrels..... said the bore of the Python had a slight "tightening"/narrowing from the cylinder to the bore.... which some claimed added to their accuracy.........

Wonder if the "new" Python has the same barrel..........................

New Shootable Python

The warranty mentioned above is interesting, 1 year.
To me Warranty is a double edge sword, damn if you
do, damn if you don't. Not a Deal Breaker to me.

I went to my favorite Local Gun Store yesterday. They
were busy, but I got chance to talk with the Owner.

Of course I asked about the New Python. They have
had many customers ask about it. They didn't
get any, and would eventually get a few.

He wants to see more Reviews. Have not been able
to sell the Cobra's in the Cabinet not too impressed
with them.

Also ran into a Friend there also, Collector of Pythons,
said old vs. new didn't matter to him. He just likes Colt.

Your sarcasm-fu is STRONG.:D

Well, "my" thread made it to page 3 before the bashing started.

Anyway, I've decided Smiths offer far more value. I got out my 66-8 for a thorough evaluation and guess what, it's got a great trigger both ways, I know from shooting it's more accurate than I am, it cost me less than 1/2 of a Python, AND it's paid for. So as far as 357 goes I'm in a happy place.:D

I think it's new and exciting on something that was built up so much, I can certainly understand to reference to what carmakers do nowadays...

BuT I still want one just because...

I gave my father a little over MSRP on a new one for his old one a 1981 nickel snake(PICTURED BELOW) , and would love to have a stainless to go with her. I'll pull this one out from time to time and take her for a spin. According to my father she has under 1k of mixed .38/.357 more .38 than any.

The new Python's deffinatly seem to be a "shooters gun"

All just IMO

Thanks
Erik
