How's your ammo?

The one positive thing I learned from President Bill Clinton's term in office is to never be caught without enough ammo. I have since positioned myself to never experience an ammo shortage again. During the .22 LR shortage not that long ago I was that guy at the range shooting .22's like there was an endless supply still on the shelves because, for me, there was.

I think that I am pretty good for ammo for most of my calibers for this one. Academy is still open and I still pick up a few boxes every week or so. At least my wife does not think that I am crazy if I come home with a few extra canned goods these days. I guess you can never have too much toilet paper, but I figure that we have enough. I am not trying to corner the market on anything, just want to see the end of this crisis and move on. I hear the complaints and hyperbole on how difficult this is and remember my grandfather wounded by Mustard gas in the WWI trenches and uncles wounded at Guadacanal, Okinawa and Bastogne - what a bunch of whiny (insert your word here) that we have become. Will I get a participation trophy for this?

+1 on that!

But, after Slick Willie left in 2001 and the AWB sunsetted in 2004, ammo prices hit rock bottom.

Remember the Port 7.62x51 AIM was selling for $149/case, shipped? Other stuff was equally cheap.

I held off buying any firearms for those 3 years and just bought case lots for stuff I did have. 7.62x51, 7.62x39, .45acp, and higher end .22lr (Wolf MT). Haven't gone through 1/3 of it yet.

Funny thing, after the AWB expired, prices rose quite a bit and fast too. Took that "Buy it cheap and stack it deep", to heart.

First AWB bill prompted me to buy more full-size mags for my Para-Ord, and to start stockpiling ammo. I have enough, although I seldom pass up an opportunity to buy 158gr .38 Spl when it is priced right. PPPPPPP.

Due to quality and/or price, I shoot 75% or better reloads. I buy my reloading supplies a year at a time, and usually 2 or 3 years out! So I have up to 3 years of common ammo, but 2 years worth is still in component form. I'm not sure anyone could afford a 3 year supply of 338 Lapua at $10 a round!, but it is very manageable at about $1.05 each!

Some how I just keep finding 45-70 brass, So I load it in a pleasant to shoot load of 300gr LRNFP @ 13-1500 fps. I plink with this a lot, but still have a 6 or 7 year supply on hand! I end up shooting this more than my AR's, and give the black plastic crowd a real surprise on gallon jugs of water at 200 yards!

As some may know I work for one of the big sporting goods retailers. As of last night if you're a revolver guy there was plenty of ammo. If you're a semi-auto person not so much unless that semi is .25acp and .32acp. If you are an AR guy you better have already stocked up.

I actually had a person walk up to me with a few boxes different rifle calibers ammo and ask if I had any rifles that would shoot it.

People in NJ and CA who, pre-pandemic supported their gun laws, got the government they deserved.

I've got quite a bit of 9mm, 38, and 45 (my main calibers).

I'm more concerned at this point about food. I've prepared for this food-wise, but no amount of preparedness makes you feel 'good' about the prospect of possibly needing it. Ditto with the guns and ammo I have.

Nothing new. I have been in my current business for 10+ years and every year there is some type of panic buying that sends people hoarding ammo and usually "assault weapons" they fear will be banned.

My experience is it kills businesses like mine because people will put off safety related items like handgun safes because they need to buy another 10,000 rounds of ammo.

I have only seen one bump in business and that was after Sandy Hook when people thought Obama was going to be able to implement National storage laws. As soon as the Senate turned Republican the frenzy ended and back to normal.

These panic buys hurt some gun related companies more than you would realize and the ammo and gun manufacturers always benefit.

I've got enough for several intense skirmishes. A protracted war, maybe the first year or so. By then "battlefield pickups" should be available. Disclaimer: The preceding statement is humor, not current mental status report. Joe

OK, I can understand toilet paper, and akk the other stuff. But what is going with drinking water.? In all the hurricanes I've been through I've only lost the city water once. And since we normally keep a case on hand for emergencies I'm still mystified about the drinking water. I did find a couple of gallons of distilled water for my bipap machine. Which I use every night. Frank
Frank, I live in Jeanerette which should tell you all you need to know about the necessity of having potable water  Our water is SO bad that it will ruin an ice maker in about 6 months. I buy drink ice and bottled water. I ain't a gonna hoard the water, but I NEED my drink ice!!! :D

It’s better to have and not need than need and not have.

My mantra since 1999

Stopped in my local Bass Pro last night as I was in the parking lot making a trade. The handgun ammo aisle was about 98% cleaned out. Thankfully I am good to go after learning the lessons in 2013

I just don't understand the toilet paper scare. I raised all 3 children with cloth diapers. One can always resort to using a washcloth and clean them like you would a cloth diaper.....while it's not something we are excited about doing if we need to, it's not worth a panic in my opinion.

Good to go with my ammo.

My only ammo issue is with 45 ACP. Seems that the 500 round box I thought I had was a figment of my imagination .While looking I did discover another 1000 of 9mm I don't remember buying. Maybe I got fat fingers ordering online and bought 9mm instead of 45 ACP.

Doesn't matter, I'm unlikely to hit the range any day soon the way it's going in Vegas.

Why in Heavens name are people hoarding buying ammo? Afraid the ammo suppliers are all gonna fold up and go out of business?
I guess for the same reason Florida is closing the East coast beaches???????????
