Went to the LGS today and did the paperwork for my new in the box Remington 552 Speedmaster .22LR semi-automatic rifle. It’s going to be a 3-5 day wait, that’s how backed up my LGS is here.

I will say one thing though. Initial impressions were beyond words. The wood is SO PRETTY and just FLAWLESS. The receiver was a nice shiny satin black and the bluing on the barrel and mag tube were very nice. Sights were on straight and everything appeared good.

After hearing (and maybe even participating in some Remington bashing of late), I got... tipsy... one night and figured I’d buy one just to try it out (anybody else been there, real talk LOL). I will say my 1100 and 870 Police were both produced in the past 5 years and both have been perfect.

Checked off a lot of boxes. I like a tube fed mag for field use and the gun can run shorts, holds like 23 of them which is nuts. And it runs the new CCI Quiets.

If it’s a dud you guys will know about it. Hoping it shoots as good as it looks and operates properly. If so, I will scope it with Leupy 4X scope.

-Jay

One of my old time favorites too. Very impressive looking rifle and always was. Please let us know how it performs. Might have another buyer here. Haven't shot one in years.

Good choice. Fun gun and shoots about anything .22. It's not a benchrest rifle , however , it is an adult toy that's amazingly accurate. Hard not to smile after slinging a tube full of lead.

JayF....I've been "tipsy" once or twice; I'm 63, so maybe more than twice. But the purchases I've made at the time were decisions I made while not "tipsy", it just required that extra push. As long as money is available, I have no problem with what I've bought. I just spent over $1600 on two new revolvers, both which I've wanted bad for quite a while, especially the blued 5". (Two separate purchases; I would've stopped at the blue if it were available!) Always know what you want before you hit "SEND" on the old debit or credit card! BTW, .327 FedMag
is a helluva nice cartridge to shoot from a tank! Easy as a .22 K frame, almost! Enjoy your new piece when you get it and are able to shoot it!

I have no idea of the quality of a 2020 552, but the 552 I purchased in 1968 has been a great shooter over my lifetime. Probably many thousands of rounds down range as it was my only 22 in the 70s and 80s when I was young and had very little money for guns. Mine is very accurate for a semi auto gun and has always handled any ammo acquired without problems.

Agree emphatically on Remy, Winnie, etc. How the diminutives came into fashion, I don't know.

And the Speedmaster is a fine .22 rifle, well made and reliable. It will hold a lot of .22 Shorts, but finding shorts for sale? Probably not.

They’re neat old guns, I have my dads 1966 mfg 550-1 and it has hold/range estimates taped to the side of the stock in typewriter font (50+ years old). Needs a good disassembly and cleaning but it’s still works well.

My Speedmaster 1988dom is a first class rifle.... op par with my 39a Marlin as to fit and finish and accuracy.

I've had one for about 20 years now. Great guns, but you'll need to take them apart and clean them every 5 years or so.

: )

Real stupid question here (and I collect Remingtons). Does the 552 fire shorts in semi auto fashion or are they cycled manually?

From my readings, they’re basically the only semi-auto that can run shorts, longs, and long rifles. It holds like 22-23 shorts which is pretty cool!

cool also because you can run LR/L/S all at the same time. I've got a field grade and a BDL

I too would like to find a nice used one. My Dad had one when I was a lad. I remember my uncles and him shooting it at my uncles home in the country. Someone dropped a box of ammo in the grass, and Dad told me to run up to the house and ask my aunt for a “brass magnet”. She looked at me like I was nuts. Took me a little while to realize he was afraid of me
getting hurt. I have no idea what became of it.

I had 2 of them and 2 572 pumps. Both always worked flawlessly and I can stuff a pile of cb 22s in them. quieter than my air rifle!I sold 2 of them and kept the 2 nicest ones. Both BDLs I believe. You wont regret it
