Remember the scene from "City Slickers" where they are talking about childhood memories? I forget now which character (it might have been Billy Crystal) said that the 1st time that they went to Yankee Stadium they were amazed that the grass was green. When I heard that, my jaw dropped open.
Dad was stationed at Ft. Wadsworth, on Staten Island. He took my brother and I to Yankee Stadium. We were in the cheap seats, way high. The stairs went up and us, and then we came out to where we could see the field. It was green, the richest green I had ever seen. That was a shock to my 7 year old eyes, since everyone knew that the playing field at Yankee Stadium was grey.
Yes, I am old enough that B&W TV was a major part of my life. I was in HS when Dad finally broke down and purchased a color TV, a Philco. Mom quickly destroyed it by placing a potted plant on top, and got a little carried away watering it. It was then a year or so before another color TV came into our home.
