Keeping with the tradition of my grand parents and my parents
I picked a mess of Poke and cooked it up for supper. I about
waited to long as some of the plants are already 4ft. tall. But
I only collected the leaves of those about 1ft. high.
I rate Poke up there with any cooked green and better than
some.
Me and my 5 year old grand daughter really like the Poke Sallet,
her mom and nana turn their noses up.
Hey country folks will survive.
Also thought of Tony Joe White when picking the Poke, but did
not carry it home in a tow sack.

Not sure what that is? This is the only poke I'm familiar with:

I've never heard the song "Polk Salad Annie" but I looked it up and read the lyrics.

What's with the whole "poke sallet" thing? Is that the way the song was sung?

Poke weed, Phytolacca Americana, is to my understanding,
from a word for dye, or blood, Poke. And sallet, or salet comes
from old English meaning a mess or cooked, wilted mess.
Polk salad or other terms are really not correct. So quit
making fun of us folks from the South.

Yes, as someone pointed out, Poke can be toxic if you don.t know what you are doing. Do not eat it raw, after it has
gotten huge with red stalks, don't eat the red berries as
they are toxic to most mammals. Dolly Parton used the red
berries for lipstick when a young girl, maybe they have some
effect on body part growth, don't know.
BTW you can buy rhubarb in the store and it has a toxin in
the leaves and a small amount in the stalk. Oh, and peanuts
can kill some people, ever buy those in the store? How about
fruits and vegetables grown in a foreign country, what kind
of pesticide and herbicide have they been sprayed with or
do you care?
Most food poisoning that occurs in this country are from foods
produced commercially and sold in the markets. And those
are supposed to be checked by some govt. agency, good
luck with that.
For this little bit of education, no charge.

Disclaimer: Phytolacca americana is poisonous to humans. Proper preparation is critical.

As Rudy Manke said of wild mushrooms, there are plenty of mushrooms in the store known to be safe, there is no reason to take chances with wild ones.

Kale and spinach work fine.

When Hugo came thru Charlotte 30 years ago, the only damage to my house was poke berry stains about 30 feet up where a stem and berries was splattered against the house.

Jezz...all these years.
I thought it was Polk "Salad".

Me too. Years ago I played bass guitar in a band that performed that song quite often, and I thought the leader/vocalist was singing "Polk Salad Annie". Never paid any attention to the lyrics as I am not a singer. This funny to learn my assumption was wrong this late in life.
