Poke Sallet

The berries were used in coloring paint. When an historic house in my home community was restored they found the original color was purple, which came from paint colored with poke berries. It was also used by some to manufacture ink.

I had a neighbor that ate poke berries for his arthritis. He would freeze them so he would have them all year. I tried them for several months but couldn't tell that they helped so I quit eating them. It's been a long time but it seems like maybe a dozen a day and swallow them whole like a pill. I'm 78 and still on my feet so I don't guess they did too much damage too me. Larry

Yup. Only poke I know involves Aku AKA Skipjack tuna. ;)

An Asian dish, Poke has been naturalized into Asia and Europe.

My older sister and I sold Allen's Can 100's of pounds of Poke
in the 50's. Seems like we got a penny/lb. Allen's Can home
was in Siloam Springs, Ar. Their first canning plant was NE of
Siloam Springs. Allen's Can also started the Popeye brand of
spinach. Sorry to say the Allen family sold the business several
years ago

...from you good people. Like Xfuzz, I was one of the dummies who thought it was poke 'salad.' :o

Please refrain from mocking me...or just go ahead with your bad selves. :p

Be safe...be well.

Don't be to tough on yourself, as you were probably in the
majority of people in this country. After all salad is a more
common word and when spoken sallet and salad sound
very much alike.
I would hate to think of the words I mispronounce.
