I have been told that Internet Explorer is going the way of the buffalo and I will have to go to a new internet browser. They are pushing the new thing called Edge. Anyone using it? I'm going to have to change eventually I guess. Just trying to do it simply. I've tried other browsers in the past and not had much as far as good experiences with them. But I am NOT tech savvy anyway...so the main reason for asking about the Microsoft product

Internet Explorer was replaced with Edge about 5 years ago. Use Edge the same way you used Explorer. No big deal.
If you have Windows 10, Edge is built in. I know nothing about it.
I have learned to avoid Microsoft browsers entirely. Give Google Chrome another try.

I have been very happy with Edge. There are a lot of sights that will not work anymore on Internet Explorer so many have switched to Chrome, which I use also.

Try Chrome and Firefox.

Edge is now in version 2. The first one was not very good. Microsoft switched to a Chromium-based engine for v.2, so it is basically Chrome with a Microsoft skin. It even will use Chrome extensions (but only from the Microsoft Store). I still use Chrome at home and at work, but Edge is there if needed. I use it at home to open my gMail, keeping it from being another tab on the desktop Chrome window.
No Windows 10..Think Older...8.1. What will I have to do to use the Edge..Will I have to erase/get rid of IE? or just download the Edge. I tried Firefox once..didn't work well for me...or maybe I should say...I didn't work well with it. I do want to make it easy as I am REALLY not a techie type at all
Heck Big Brother already knows where I live...and all that stuff you said is greek to me...I do know what a VPN is though...I wouldn't know how to set one up

Just download another browser like FireFox, there is nothing to it. You can keep the Edge or whatever else you want. Just have to set it as a default.

No I phone Have a Samsung 10? I recently bought an I pad from a friend. He had gotten it for his wife who passed away. I'm trying to get it set up for my wife to use. It may be a problem though..she can hardly use her cell phone to make a call. So then I assume I can just download the edge thingie?
Only reason I asked, is your phone is using a different browser The I pad will use a different one as well.
so it just takes a little learning curve to get used to any browser.

There is no reason to download or change anything. Your IE browser will continue to work just fine. If/when you end up with a new system, IE will not be available for that system. At some point, it it hasn't happened already, Micro Soft will discontinue support/updates of IE. But it will not go away from your computer. As time goes on, due to the internal specifications for browsers and web sites, you may see some web sites that will not properly work with IE. But I suspicion that they will be few and far between for a good long while.
If you wish to download Edge, you can do so here: Download New Microsoft Edge Browser | Microsoft On the first screen, click the down arrow on the Download button and select Windows 8.1.
I have not tried the above. I use as few apps as possible from MS. I have used Firefox for years and have been very pleased with it. I just purchased a new laptop a couple weeks ago. It came with Windows 10 and Edge came along for the ride. I used Edge to download Firefox, transferred all my pertinent settings and information from my old laptop and am happy as a clam.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
Wife and I spent 2 days setting up my new laptop. 99% of that time was spent trying to make heads or tails of Edge. I'm no wizz but Miss Pam is pretty sharp and it finally occurred to me that is SHE couldn't get it figured out the I didn't have any use for it at all.
Back to Firefox and bidness as usual. Easy peasy....

On the iPAD, safari is the default browser and works like IE. Or you can do what I did which was to use Safari to download Firefox. It will run quite happily on the iPAD. Dave_n

A word to the wise... depending on the version of Internet Explorer you have, Microsoft may have stopped or will shortly stop issuing security updates for it.
I'm still running WIN7, with all of the recent WIN10 update fiascos that have taken place, I have no desire to be forced by MS to an unreliable version of Windows.
When MS dropped support for the last WIN7 compatible version of IE, I switched to Firefox and have never looked back.

Brave is derived from Google Chrome, protects your privacy, and uses duckduckgo search engine. All of my Chrome extensions work with Brave.
