I've never sold or shipped ammo on line before. I have a couple bricks of CCI SV I'm going to be letting go and I was wondering how to ship legally. I guess USPS is out. What are my options? Thanks.

UPS ground with an ORM-D label on the box.

You have to take it to a UPS customer service center, UPS Stores won't take it.

They need to ship common carrier ground (UPS or Fed Ex) and you'll need to take the package to a company hub. A "brown box store" won't work. You can't ship through the USPS.

I'd stick with the Continental US. Ground won't get you to Hawaii and will be expensive to Alaska! You won't have to pay any Hazmat fees, but the box needs to have a ORM-D label. You can print one out online. Other than that, no restrictions.

Cost will vary greatly, not only because of weight but also how far it's going.

I've been consolidating calibers recently and sold off some ammo I no longer had a gun for. Just sell it as - buyer pays actual shipping. Then get their zip code, weight and size of the box, online quote will get you close enough.

It's not as expensive as you'd think and a pretty easy process. I made more in the long run vs selling local.

I bought a 1000 rounds of 9mm last month, and the box didn't have ORM-D on it anywhere.

I've bought a ton of ammo online and this was a first. I even double and triple checked the box for the label.

There's an alternate label that I've used, it's a black and white diamond. The ORM-D label has to include the words "cartridges, small arms" which I didn't like. You can download one and print it.

Cost to ship,ammo vaties with location & weight but it isnt cheap. I sent 300rds to GA once from Kalif for a competition. It cost me like $25. Never again, just put more ammo in my checked baggage.

Another helpful hint: When shipping UPS or FedEx the rates are different for residential and business addresses. If your buyer can have the package delivered to a business address there can be some savings on the shipping costs.

Hope you get a lot of money for it. Shipping is gonna cost you or the buyer.

The pain is the requirement to take it to a UPS terminal. The one closest to me is about 45 minutes, one way. I think the shipping cost is based on weight and distance only, not the contents. I have received case lots of ammo via FedEx, but never tried shipping any.

It is done all the time, but at the seller's risk. It is illegal to ship ammunition without proper labeling and disclosure of what you are shipping to UPS. I am certain that the fines can be much higher than the additional shipping cost!!

What I want to know is what is going to happen at UPS after December 31, 2020??

Is a Hazardous Materials Label or Marking Required?

Yes, (until December 31, 2020) packages that meet the definition of Cartridges, small arms must be marked with the proper shipping name "Cartridges, small arms", and designated as "ORM-D".

Are you close to or have a relationship with a local gun store. Talk to them they may ship it for you as a courtesy and reduced fee vs. person to person!

Never take NO as an answer from someone that doesn't have the authority to say YES.




That said I see you live in a FOID state, so I couldn't guess what laws are in place in the USSR of Illinois.

It might have been store policy.

I had to send my Sig P365 back to the factory for repair a year ago and Sig said it had to go to a Fedex hub for shipping which would have been a pain. I called the closest Fedex store and they said as long as it was going back to the factory they would take it. The guy at the counter said all hubs have to accept shipments like that but at the owners discretion all authorized shipping centers could.

But whether it is store policy or company policy there is no point in arguing with someone working at the counter. He cannot change the policy.
