Reintroduce the Mountain Gun

great idea; really S&W, how hard would it be?

It isn't a matter of how hard it would be. It's a matter of how many they would sell.

I am very happy with my M69 and wouldn't buy a N-frame mountain gun myself. I think the M69 fills the role of a relatively light 44 better than a N frame mountain.

I hope S&W eventually makes one if 44 and 45 for those of you that do want one. It seems revolvers like the mountain gun and 610 come and go. My theory is there isn't enough demand for them to be a regular item but is S&W waits several years enough demand builds up to justify a small run of them.

I do wish I could have found a 617 without a full lug. Not sure if a L frame 22 would be considered a mountain gun but shaving a few ounces off would have been nice.

"I keep wondering what the minimum order would be for a small run from the factory..200?"

There is purported to be less than 50 of these. I believe the number is actually 42. They were special ordered. They were then shipped to the new owners. Then, they were shipped back to the factory. They sat on the shelf at the factory for about two years. Then they were all sold through one sporting goods outfit.

It will be interesting to see if S&W gears up for this model ever again.
I know that I cherish the ones I have and they are the absolute, to me, the best design for a .22 that Smith made. It covers all the bases. Good weight, adjustable sights, non-full lug, ten shots, and, ALL stainless. And, if you think the internal lock is a joysucker for this .22, then you ain't never gonna be completely happy.

Great working man's gun.

enjoy,
bdGreen

I've always just sort of assumed that firearms like the Model 69, 329, 325, and Governor were the modern equivalents of the Mountain Gun line.

Please reintroduce the S&W Mountain Gun

Series of Revolvers.

I think this would be a great addition and

bring back the Romance in S&W Revolvers

Calibers in 41Mag, 44Mag, and 45Colt should

be considered.

Thank you S&W for reading this.
Issue/reissue a 686+ in Mountain Gun configuration with 3"/4"/5" barrels. Those slab-sided guns are just ugly, and the full-lug barrels are unnecessarily heavy.

All I would ask is to please dump the stainless and make some blued ones.
A blued 10 shot 22 with a light profile barrel would be great.
Seems smith has totally forgot how to make a blued revolver!
They have made a few recent introductions like the 9mm L and N frames that I would definitely buy if they made them blued.

A few years ago, I found myself with a pair of S&W Mountain Guns chambered in 45 Colt. Shipped the cylinder of one of them to TK Custom and requested they mill it to accept moon-clipped .45 ACP rounds, chamfer chamber mouths, etc. It is the easiest loading 45 ACP revolver I've ever owned and is reasonably accurate with 200 grain ACPs. It's still a tack-driver with "Long" Colts loaded with Venturino's old W-231 load, as is the 45 Colt that remains unaltered. I have since traded for a Mountain Gun chambered in .45 ACP. It is extremely accurate with cast 200 grainers in front of middle-of-the-road loads of Trail Boss, near manual-minimum loads of WST, and near-max loads of Titegroup. Together, they are my favorite revolvers,

I have only owned three, but every one was a tack driver. Why? Were they all made special or did I just luck out!

Does anyone here on the Forum know if Smith & Wesson
has a Representative assigned to read and bring to
S&W Management what the Customer is interested in?

Thank you in advance for your Replies.

I have no inside information but seriously doubt it. If they did we would all be out shooting our brand new mountain guns, 10mm M&Ps and 9mm carbines that take M&P magazines.

What a few dozen hardcore enthusiasts want is probably a pretty poor way to predict what would really sell. The vast majority of S&W sales are to people that are gun owners but not gun enthusiasts. I suspect a lot of the guns we are clamoring for in the forum would sell in very low volumes. S&W has actual sales data to show what people are really buying. And its not mountain revolvers. They made those in the past and quit because they were not selling enough.

I would still really like a 617 mountain revolver with a 4 inch barrel and no underlug. But I am not expecting to get one.

I think if a lot of us email Smith and Wesson and ask for a mountain gun in .22 , they might pay attention. I do every year but a majority might help .

Mountain Fever

S&W I bet you could re-introduce the Mountain Gun
before we receive the new Covid19 Vaccine.
