Age and bleeding

I learned long ago to always keep Superglue handy to stop bleeding. It works every time. Hospitals use it under the label Nu Skin.

My experience with super glue is that I get one use out of a bottle of the stuff before it either glues itself shut or dries up.

In any event, I’d need a couple dozen bottles Of the stuff to get through the month.

In place of glue and bandages, my dogs happily lick my wounds to make them stop bleeding.

I can remember handling a winch line barehanded when young and now I need gloves for a cotton rope. I don't take any kind of blood thinner or aspirin. I guess it's just old age and if the outside is in that bad of shape I am led to believe the inside is just as bad. I have lived 10 and 11 years older then my grandpas and 13 years longer than dad. I attribute my long life to the habit of just keep getting up every morning. Larry

That and bruising. I have not hit 60 yet but any little bump seems to leave a bruise now. Constantly saying to myself, "Now what the heck did I hit to cause that?"

Same here.

Another thing that can be used for stopping bleeding is cayenne pepper. I know because I've done it. Years ago I was at the camp in northern Quebec and I cut my left little finger badly. The camp was a 45 minute drive from the nearest town that had any medical facilities. Luckily I had a bottle of cayenne pepper that I had brought for making chili. I remembered reading that Indians in South America had used cayenne pepper as an astringent for closing cuts. My uncle poured medicinal turpentine on my hand to disinfect the cut and then I poured the cayenne pepper on my hand. The pepper formed a crust and the bleeding stopped. I was able to bandage up my hand and not have to go anywhere for treatment.

I just happened to have a doctor's appointment scheduled for after I got back from Quebec. I told the story to my doctor and showed him my hand and he said, "You guys did pretty good with your backwoods medicine."

On a scale of 1-10. How did the cayenne pepper feel? Larry

I'm in the same predicament you're in. I went to the welding supply store and bought leather sleeves to protect my arms when I prune the trees and the shrubs. They work and I wear them often.

I wear gloves and long sleeves at work now in addition to a bump cap. Getting old and bald sucks sometimes. At least I don’t have skinned knuckles, scratched forearms and a bloody scalp when I get home anymore. PPE definitely helps, but it takes some getting used to.

42 years as a mechanic. Cuts and bruises were a way of life. My arms are pretty much dead to any feeling from the elbows down. If I saw blood, I'd have to stop to see where it was coming from. Most of the time the bleeding wasn't much and ended quickly.
Now I'm retired, old and thin skinned. The slightest bump leaves a bruise, the slightest scratch bleeds something terrible. I've taken a baby aspirin daily for about 20 years after a heart attack. That hasn't been too bad. But last year the Doc put me on blood thinners and now its terrible. Twice, I've gotten up in the morning just like any other day. Grabbed a kleenex to blow my nose and ended up with a nose bleed that lasted for over an hour.
This *@#! sucks!

My mother suffered with the purple bruises on her arms,,
anything more than a slight bump, a purple bruise would show up, and stay a LONG time..

Well, now, I am old enough, and have the same issue,,
but, I have found a solution to the purple marks,,

Simply apply Vicks VapoRub once, or twice a day,,

Instead of the purple bruise showing for a week or two,,
it will be mostly GONE in a day, or two,, :D

Like most here, I need to take anticoagulants. Therefore a scratch I barely notice usually causes bleeding and it may take awhile before I notice it. Nearly always on arms and legs. Another effect is that it doesn't take much of a bump to cause a skin bruise. I almost always have two or three bruises on my arms.

I have been on blood thinners for 16 years. These are cheap and disposable. I am rarely without one nearby or on my person if out. Ruthie keeps a few in her purse to patch me and other things if needed.
