Have a chance to buy this 629-4 6". Gun is in decent condition but the owner self mounted a scope and drilled through the frame. Is the gun ruined functionally? He wants 850 Is the gun is still safe to function should I buy it. It will be used as a beater woods gun.

No. It looks like it is a well done professional job. The rear sight assembly will cover the holes.

As for the fairness of the price it is a matter of how bad do you want it.

If the gun is mechanically sound and looks good I would not hesitate to buy it with a drilled top strap. $850 sounds like a good deal to me. Does the 629-4 have a full under lug?

From your picture the finish looks a little funky. Almost like a black finish had been applied then most of it removed at some point.

AS the mods stated -4 was the start of the drilled an tapped taop strap. Price is fair not great. Then again these are high demand times for firearms. 629-4's are definitely sought after. They have all the current engineering changes people like, and none of the stuff they don't like...MIM parts and keyhole. If that were a 629-4 4" gun, $850 would be a "buy right now" price.

Depending on condition, the price seems "ok".. The number of 629s that used to pop up on a daily basis at gunbroker has been reduced considerably. Whether people are hoarding or just availability, don't know. Depending on preferences, don't believe the 629s w/o full underlug have interchangeable front sights, not even pinned.

btw: literally just looked at my 629-4 6.5" and confirmed it is drilled/tapped with 3 holes.

FWIW I bought a pair of standard barrel, no lug, 6" 629-4's before the pandemic. The square butt was found in a local pawn shop in Dec 2019 ($760 otd with sales tax) and the round butt came from Montana in Feb 2020 ($730) complete with a nice shoulder rig from MontanaHolster.com. Both came with factory Hogue grips. no box, good to excellent shooter condition, no cosmetic or mechanical issues. I haven't seen a decent 29/629 for sale for less than a $K since March 2020.

Personally, I wouldn't make that purchase. And definitely not for $850.

$550 maybe. And only to see about re-selling it for $600 - $650 or using it for a project where I wouldn't mind a 629 being sacrificed.

Yea, these -4 guns are hardly worth taking home,,,

Yes, I suppose pretty much everyone would buy it for $550 and then flip it if they didn't want to keep it. That won't be happening.
