Welcome to the Forum. If you have time, tell us a little about what it's like to be a gun enthusiast in Belgium.

The AAN prefix would indicate a likely shipping date of 1983. With regard to model number, all 586s are blued, all 686s are stainless. The model number will also be stamped on frame in the cutout area you can see when you swing the cylinder out. A 1983 gun should be a so-called "no dash".

The 586 came in nickel as well as blue. As mentioned, the model number should be visible when you open the cylinder. Post pictures because I would guess it is a nickel 586, based on your description of "chrome."

I have just this picture...

Greetings! That definitely appears to be a nickel 586, those grips would be later or aftermarket than the originals. I don't have my reference book handy but I would guess 1983-1985. The hammer and trigger are case hardened in color. As mentioned by CJSmith the exact model number and engineering version will be in the section of the frame where the crane mates up.

Just as an aside I have this 1981 686 my late father bought new. The difference in the grips is better shown.

The seller or person who took the photo should be able to give you the model number. Both the 586 and 686 were/are made in the three letter/four digit serial number series so you can't tell which model it is from that.

The single photo either shows a worn blued 586, or a worn nickel 586. If the parts are original a model 686 should have a silver dull chromed hammer and trigger. The stocks are current factory replacements.

Yes, nickel 586. As others have said, and I forgot, the trigger and hammer are another giveaway. I sure would be proud to own that sweet hunk of metal! I just don't care for those new style wood stocks at all. Maybe it's the lack of the metal emblem.

I would be curious as to the price on that "for sale" tag, assuming that is for sale in Belgium. Also, let us know if you took it home with you.

There are also Pro Series made in 686. This is a 686-6 7 shot, 5" barrel. Complete impulse transaction. When I saw it, NEEDED it. Also have a 586 4" no dash. Bob

I could be wrong but on all of my nickel plated S&Ws....when you look at the back of the cylinder, the ejector star is blued. Maybe that would be a better way to tell what it is...unless if the "chromed" guns also have black ejected stars. If that's the case, we're kinda back to square one.
