Not sure why everyone here insists on ignoring the public statements being put out almost weekly by companies such as Walmart, Johnson & Johnson and others who have admitted they purposely withheld access to certain of their items in certain areas for 2020.

Why people keep insisting the 2020 ammo shortage is "just like every other shortage and you're just an idiot because you didn't spend 40 yrs stock piling" is a mystery to me because it's NOT been like every other shortage.

A normal shortage lasts a couple of months. Not an entire year.
Covid is not the reason because ammo and gun manufactures were given essential business status and were not hampered by the shut down orders.

A monkey can stand at a machine and push empty casings in to a hopper so it's not "we had to train new people to replace all the dead ones" excuse. It takes 3 days to "train" someone with even a 50 IQ to do basic production tasks. It's not a months long process. Days. A week at MOST.

Ammo manufactures purposely cut production and they will eventually admit to it or a disgruntled worker will eventually confirm it as "payback" for getting fired or something. It's why Walmart finally admitted to it because a corporate manager blabbed about their decision and Walmart had to do damage control.

1. Back a few years the "great 22 shortage" lasted one full year.
I watched people stand in line for hours just to buy a brick of anything.
2. The China virus shut down ammunition and firearm manufacturing until manufacturers took the proper steps to protect their workers. NOTHING was produced until that was accomplished. Email Chris Killroy CEO of Ruger and he will give you an earful of facts.
3. Those "empty case pushing monkeys" you refer to are American workers doing their best to ensure you get somewhat consistent ignition at a reasonable price.
4. Walmart stopped selling most, and in some cases all ammunition, because of pressure from the boycott brigade.
5. If you have any evidence that ammo makers are conspiring to hold back on manufacturing, please let us all know.

Sorry for my rant and even sorrier that some people are venting because of lack of pre-planning or a poor purchase they themselves made.

Very hard to resist the temptation to sell at these prices. The only reason I don't is I have a good idea what's coming. The makers will get caught up when general panic dies down. I will be willing to bet that ammo will be more expensive and there is going to be a user tax on it, like gasoline.

As a VP of Remington told me in about 2012/13...the old retail will be the new wholesale and he was right about primers 22s and most ammo..there were of course sales that beat those prices...And not many realize it but when supplies come in from other places the US makers cut their prices to get the newbies out of the business. such as Browning S&W Activ and USAC.. The named ammo makers all quit selling when they could not compete...Cheap Russian Eastern European and Chinese is of course cheaper to sell but we know the quality of the stuff is usually not up to ammo made here. But as far as the rest..the pols we have now will probably tax ammo... just an everyday observation. Please no political comments!! The way things are shaking right now it looks like a few tough times coming. This Covid thing has hurt us badly. Maybe the people getting the vaccines will change things going forward

"Plenty of rimfire" is a highly flexible concept. When I was running the rifle ranges of Boy Scout camps 30 years ago I had to plan on a minimum of a 500 round brick of 22 LR on a slow day and sometimes two bricks if things got real busy.

OTOH when I got mildly interested in Bullseye Pistol, a half a case of good target ammo (five bricks) would last me a season or two. Now that I'm just shooting occasionally, a bulk box of Federal Auto Match lasts me a loooong time. It's all a matter of perspective.

I have plenty for me, actually just discovered some more in a safe clean out, I forgot I had.

Traded 3 boxes of Auto Match to a guy at work for this Benchmade Bailout. He was happy, I was happy.

Could this have something to do with the lack of stock on shelves? Gun sales boomed in 2020, with background checks hitting record highs as millions of people bought guns for the first time

There is no doubt that 2020 saw millions of new gun owners join our ranks. But the VAST majority of those new guns sold were 9mm, .380 acp and 38 Special.

New gun owners were not buying .44 Mag or .41Mag or most of the other MAG rounds as their first ever carry self defense round/gun. They were buying the most common gun/round made.

That is 3 rounds of the 90+ possible handguns rounds you could of purchased.

So a shortage in one or all 3 of those rounds makes sense. It doesn't make sense for ALL THE REST. Especially for 22lr which has been made by the millions per month for 100 years.

I went through my ammo inventory the other day and pulled out all of my rimfire ammo. Not a whole lot, but, a little more than I anticipated. The majority is .22LR. Some decent target stuff like Wolf Match/Match Extra, SK Sub Sonic, Federal Match, but mostly CCI Mini Mag HP & Standard Velocity. I was surprised to find I still had 4 50 rd boxes of ELEY TENEX! And a bunch of bulk 'shoot'em-up' stuff. A good supply of .17HMR V-Max, and just a few boxes of .22WMR. It should be enough to keep the freezer stocked with rabbit and squirrel, pest/varmint control, and get in some target shooting trigger time ta' boot!

That's a good start.......

Guys, no BS here . I know a guy that has 1 million rounds of rimfire ammo stashed away . Yes I said 1 million. And that's just the rimfire stash, not counting what he has in centerfire ammo .
And the sad thing is he really is just a casual shooter . Yes he's a hoarder. He's been doing this for close to 40 years .
I feel like telling his wife to call me first the day he kicks the bucket .

Back when I had my gun shop I had a fellow that did the same. He still buys guns and ammo..reloading supplies etc. At one time he probably had more primers and guns than I did. Never went shooting. I talked him into shooting a bit and he went at it big time...Since I moved away he has gone back to almost no shooting again. Unmarried not many friends and he just likes buying...but he has the money to do it. I hope he has me in his will

When you are a hoarder, the gratification comes from the acquisition and ownership. If you take it out and expend it, you no longer own it, so there is no resulting gratification. Don't ask me how I know this!

Fortunately for me and my shooting, I am not an ammo hoarder, at least not yet. I do have a comfort level for supply however, and find myself adjusting my shooting habits to accommodate the shifting balance of calibers on hand. Since factory ammo is now harder to get, I shoot more reloads. When factory ammo is cheap and plentiful, I get to spend more range time and less time at the reloading bench. This is my rationalization, YMMV.

So which are you? A bragger or a complainer? I am someone who tries to plan ahead, but I am both a bragger and complainer. I have stocked up and can probably outlast the current situation. Also, I tend to complain about the ridiculous prices of all things firearms/ammo related.
