Hi Folks,

Has anyone used this combination?

Viht publishes data for N110 and the 240gr Hornaday JTC-Sil but I would really like some specific N110 and the 240gr Nosler JSP if someone has a source?

Thanks in advance,

Scrummy

What rifle are you using ?

Hi Ed,

Chiappa Alaskan with a 20" barrel and a 1:20 twist.

Currently with a Leupold 2.5x28 Scout Scope

Skinner carry case:

Reckon should be good for a cleaning kit / rod and an MTM box of 50 rds.

And when you unpack it:

And out on the range:

Hoping to develop a plinking load (240gr cast lead RNFP and Unique currently in use) and a hunting load (Thinking 240 gr Nosler JSP. Maybe Swift A-Frame or the 265gr Hornady over H110 or N110 as H110 is becoming harder find)

Best wishes,

Scrummy

Hi Srummy,

I). Your Alaskan Take Down rifle looks like a very nice & handy Lever Action set-up to me :)
How good is the trigger and how does it shoot (with factory-ammo / handloads: 5shots/100m or yards) ?

II). Not so much own experience* with .44 Remington Magnum out of rifles here...
*OK, I remember shooting a Marlin 1894 belonging to a friend (only on paper) but with
the gun- & hunting-laws here in Germany I'm a bit limited:
So for the .44's only two revolvers** (M 29-2 & M 629-3 Classic DX) and for the lever-action rifles only a .22l.r. Erma & an early (= ported = loud!) Marlin GG in .45-70Gov. in the safe.
**No real handgun-hunting allowed here, only finishing-shots after the poor deer or pig was hit by a car or train

III). VV N 110 is a great powder for magnum-loads in the .44 (and for .357 Magnum, also) !
OK, perhaps most important (for me): Never had a problem with finding VV N 110 nearby, something I can not say about some other powders (...have not seen Bullseye in years ).

Sorry, no own experience with Nosler bullets in .44 Magnum (only some very good results with Nosler Partition & BT in the 7x64 !).

But here you can find some thoughts about hunting with the .44 Remington Magnum
.44 Magnum

P.44
...still searching for some more VV N 110 load-data

Hi P.44

Thank you for the compliments. I find the trigger not bad and so far groupings are OK:

This was doing some load development at 50yds with lighter, 210 gr Sierra bullets:

3 shot group at 50yds. (Think the 4th/ bottom hole is where a patch fell off)

This is 5 shots with my cast bullet loads (240 RNFP and 6.5 gr of Unique)

Not bad for a take down, lever action, long eye relief scope and shot off elbows.

So, load data for 44 mag. I have found some but not specifically for rifles.

Vihtavouri has data for the 240gr Hornaday JTC-Sil with N110 at 22.1gr Max. Sadly this bullet isn't in production anymore as in a rifle, my reloading software predicts this would work well for energy levels (1,700 ftlbs). Also, that hornady bullet is quite short leaving quite a lot of powder capacity.

The reason I like the JSP is it is almost as short as the JTC-Sil and apparently (according to the link you posted) works well for penetration at carbine velocities.

I have tried H110 as Hodgdon produce 20" barrel rifle data using H110 and the 240gr JSP which gets over the 1,700 ftlb muzzle energy requirement I need.

As you say, N110 is very good powder and I like Viht generally. (A good friend of mine swears by Viht N110 in his .22 Hornet)

I load it in my 7x64 (I have recently picked up 200 x 175gr Nosler Partitions) and I will also use it to load 255gr bullets in my 9.3x62 for practice.

I miss shooting hand guns a lot. I used to live in Switzerland and shot quite a few there.

I would also like to try the Swift A-Frame that Ballistic Studies recommends.Grauwolf sells the 300gr but I think that will be too slow.

Thanks for the input.

Viele Grüße

PS What bullet weight do you use in your 7x64?

I looked up Vit data and it does not list a 44 rifle loading on pistol loads with N110 powder.

Their starting load with a 7" barrel with a OAL of 1.602" with a 240 gr bullet was; (2nd hand data )

Starting load: 20.4 grs at 1427 fps.
Full load: 22.1 grs at 1541 fps........ with N110 powder 44 Magnum load.

A 20" barrel should get 1,750 fps with no problems, with this slow powder.

Good luck with your test and loads.

Thanks Ed, I need the ranges open and get hold of a chrono

I load Remington 240 gn SJHP with Lil'Gun for a '94 AE. I have N110, but it yields lower velocities and burns cooler (single base) for revolver loads. I also passed over my 296, AA #9, 300MP, and IMR 4227 for this powder.

Thanks Roger.

Interesting Hodgdon doesn't quote Lil'gun data for the 44 mag rifle. Wonder if there is a reason they haven't done it. (Or maybe it is just that they haven't got round to it).

Clearly you find it works!

News flash !!

That weapon with a 16" barrel in 44 magnum will get;

PMC 240gr .............. 1740fps
B Hills 300gr....... 50yd group at 1"

How do I know this?
I just saw a 21 minute review of this rifle dated 2/24/2021 that talked about the good and bad points of the rifle plus six loads with Data and range work, on............
Lucky Gunner.

Hope you get to take a look at it for more info.

Nifty! I shall have a look tomorrow.

FWIW, I use Nosler 44 Sporting Handgun bullets in my 44 mag and a Smith 544 in 44-40. They are .4295" rather than the Hornady at .430" and should be perfectly safe with Hornady data. I prefer Lil Gun with magnum revolvers and pistol-caliber carbines.

Just had a look, many thanks.

I will try some of the Geco soft point I have and see if it gets enough speed.

My rifle ame rather less beat up than Lucky Gunner's test gun though they make a good point about sling attachment.

I use Mosley 44 /240gr JHP mag bullets in my 44 mag to around 1,400fps in my revolvers using 2400 powder. I use the 240 gr JSP handgun bullets in my 444 marlin. I ran into problems with the 444 the recommended load filled the case too much. I use another powder that uses less of a charge. You could run into that with loading the 44 mag rifle.
