Just found this place, after bringing home my first S&W wheel gun this week.

I scored a 686 with 500 rounds of ammo from a friend for a song. I could not resist. I've always been more of a semiauto guy, but my girlfriend grew up shooting her dad's revolvers, so it was time to add one to the gun safe and put a smile on her face.

First, the gun safe:

Freshly divorced and broke, and getting back into guns a few years ago, I found this old soda machine for $40, gutted it, and did the interior as you see here. I'm running out of room now, and may need to find a bigger one. :D

But what brought me here, was that 686.

I picked it up over a month ago, and immediately dropped it off at The Gunsmith in Phoenix. Any other Phoenicians on this board may know Nelson Ford. Great guy and an excellent gunsmith. He has worked on my stuff for more than 20 years. When I got the gun, the trigger was dangerously light, so he took care of that, and a couple other things.

I tried to get some info from S&W on the gun, but all they could come up with was a manufacture year of 1984. Nothing else. That is what led me here. I'd like to know more about the gun. I did learn that the grips are original S&W items, and people seem to really want those.

Other than guns, I'm a motorcycle guy and have been my entire life. I've been a Hayabusa owner for 19 years, and had three over that time. I find them to be an excellent road machine.

I also do a lot of aviation and motorsports photography. I'm fortunate enough to have access to some military bases and race tracks.

I also reload on a Dillon 550C. Current calibers I'm doing are 9mm, .45ACP, .44 Magnum and .223/5.56. I'll be adding 10mm to that list sooner or later. Likely later, since Dillon doesn't have any dies in stock, and won't for a while.

Enough of this. Hello to all you wankers.:D

Welcome from VA, great place to hang out. Be sure to read all the rules, they're serious but that's what makes this Forum work.

welcome from Prescott, AZ

Nice introduction and pics.
That 686 is an awesome sixgun to start with in revolvers. I suggest beginning with 38 special for her to get some gun fun under her belt before heading toward the big boy magnums.

And Yes, Dillion is in Phoenix and I'm a fan; but their dies are not the best and greatest. I have many but prefer RCBS and Redding. There's also the Lyman M dies and the Lee FCD.

I suggest the drop test for that 686 before ordering bullets. Drop different diameter bullets through each cylinder and find ones that push through with finger pressure. You might want to even slug the barrel.

Hey, looks like you got too many guns. I think the legal limit is....5. Better send some of them my way. :D

Thanks for the welcome guys. To answer a few things in one post.......

44specialfan, I spent three years in Colorado Springs. Love that area.

Old Cop, I read the rule, and will abide. This dude abides. :)

Zarr, I'm a former Mass resident. Born in Natick, grew up in Framingham.

pmanton, I spent ten years in Wickenburg, and passed through Salome countless times, and hit up Don's Cactus Bar on occasion.

oddshooter, my girlfriend grew up shooting all her dad's revolvers. She's not afraid of a little kick. :)
As far as dies go, I was always a Dillon user 20 years ago when I reloaded, and again now that I started up again. That being said, I've got a set of RCBS .223 dies and some Lee 9mm dies which I've been playing around with, and honestly, I prefer the Dillon stuff.
Tell me more about this drop test. That's new to me.

Flattop, I was just down your way last weekend, shooting out at Davis-Monthan AFB.

Rubone, I'm going to be out your way in May or June, visiting some friends in Magdalena, NM. If you ever want to open that garage for viewing, I'd love to see the bikes. I rode Harleys for 25 years, and really appreciate the old iron. Over the years, I had a couple Shovelheads, an Evo Softail and an Evo Sporty. Loved them all. Oh, and a Buell.
