Ruger Vaquero 45acp UPDATE!

The old .45colt vaquero could be had with a birdshead frame. But where’s the .45 acp magazine go?

And you would be wrong. My Old Vaquero in .45 Colt is a birds head.

Okay, big deal, I'm wrong. It's been a long time since I played in the cowboy action games.

I’m guessing the cowboy shooters don’t like the 7.5” barrels.

You're shooting for accuracy and speed against a timer, and you're going to be drawing from a holster in a considerable number of stages at a match. You certainly don't need to be drawing an extra 3 inches of barrel if you're trying to be fast.

And, just so you know, that bird's-head grip on a Single Action Army revolver never existed in the "Old West". They were on Colt's double action Lightnings and Thunderers. Howard Hawkes, I believe, used those grips on prop guns in his early 20th century weapons. When he was told that they didn't exist his response was "Well, they should have". You can look that up. ;)

My first cowboy action gun was an Italian replica SAA, Armi San Marco in .45 Colt, with a bird's-head grip. Gorgeous gun. Bob Munden tricked it out for me. I sold it because he made the trigger too light for me.

Did they even make the Vaquero in a birdshead .45 ACP? I don't think so. I doubt anyone who knows Rugers was led astray by the slight terminology question.

I have probably been guilty of doing it in the past, myself, but it's probably not best to trot out the pedantry on a friendly forum where someone's just trying to show off something he's excited to have found/bought (and others are cheering him on). You're right: it's a New Vaquero. So is mine. Now tell him it's a neat gun, eh? :)
Thank you for your comment. It was posts like the one you referenced that has led me to leaving the Colt Forum.

Tell that to the poor soul that packs his New Vaquero full of Ruger only loads and ends up killed or maimed by an exploded cylinder. :-(

I have a couple of old Vaqueros in .45 Colt. The stainless version here is a convertible with an extra cylinder for .45 ACP. I have had these guns modified with Ron Power kits so they load and index from half cock exactly like the original Colt single actions. I love shooting both of them, and heavy loads in these older guns work quite well. A 1911 mag is indeed a great speed loader for the .45 ACP guns!

The "bird's head" grips never existed originally, except on Colt double action guns. This Model 1877 is in .41 caliber.

I'm glad to see that no one has referred to an "Old Model" Vaquero, cause there ain't no such thing. Old Model Rugers (OMs) have the traditional Colt like lockwork that requires one to load only 5 rounds to avoid having a loaded round with the firing pin resting upon the primer. New Model Rugers and the conversions have a transfer bar.

OP - Nice, very nice. I like it.

A guy could go broke opening these threads. Looks like another month of Ramen Noodles for me while I start looking for one tomorrow...:)

(Quick Question) - For those who own them, do they tend to shoot to the sights with 200 grn SWC's or 230 ball? I'd like to stick to the loads I use in my 1911's.

Currently probably closest thing I have to a BBQ rig.

Hope you are just funning, but the .45 ACP mag makes a great speed loader for SA guns. Just thumb the rounds out and into the cylinder.

Yep.

Used-up 1911 mags are great for this purpose. They are even better when a coil or two is clipped off the spring so boolits slip into the cylinders with ease. Works slicker than snot on a doorknob when shooting an old New Model Blackhawk convertible.

Something that will amaze your friends is if those 45 ACPs are stuffed with full wadcutters. Really looks cool and does get some interesting conversations started at the range.

Thanks, Paladin!

Nobody questioned me but I'm glad someone else is aware of this. Of course, with a moniker like "Paladin", I'm not surprised. ;)

For fun, these are the flip sides of my Vaqueros:

Jim Taylor's wife, Twyla, used to do scrimshaw work for me.

When I asked her why she didn't match the Texas star on the left side she told me she was listening to religious music as she worked and was inspired to do the Star of David for me. :)

Twyla didn't do the eagle grips; I bought them that way.

I am a huge fan of 45acp revolvers. I own five, but have never considered a S/A gun. I would have bought that Vaquero in a heartbeat. It's a beauty. Enjoy it.
