Alert - Congress Considering S.42 & H.R. 1446

My Senate Reps. here in Pa are Pat Toomey (R) and Bob Casey (D). After years of sending off emails to them and getting canned responses (some of which weren't even on the topic) I'm pretty much done with them. Both will vote to pass the bill I'm sure... Sadly we have no PA Representatives in the Senate who will stand-up for the 2nd Amendment.

Unfortunately, here in the State of 10,000 Liberal Lakes, it is pointless to contact any of my "representatives" in Congress. My Representative and both Senators are all three "common sense" gun control fanatics.

Some districts have more 2nd Amendment friendly representatives, but not here in the Twin Cities metro.

Hi, I live in NY but I contact my reps - they might be useless, but if you don't let them know you are there, they get a free pass.

And yet their repeated attempts at pushing gun control legislation on the state have been thwarted at every turn.

You probably spend more time reading silly texts on your phone or email jokes like everyone else, how long does it take to email them or call your reps? And yes, they do care how many people contact them as they are always worried about getting reelected.

Done and Done. This is the first time I have reached out to express my opinion publicly. Not for myself, but for my children and grand children. They have the right, the same as us and our ancestors which "Shall not be infringed".

I understand our rules and terms as well as anyone. I’ve volunteered my time to Lee for over 10 years.
...
That’s exactly what I did. This is the only place on the board where we can discuss politics, provided it directly relates to our 2A rights and involves legislation. Support the NRA and fight these infringements on our 2A rights and the elected officials who support them, by all lawful means. If you’re not with us, you’re against us.

Well Chad, you are simply wrong.

As a Democrat that supports the 2nd Amendment, you really should consider bipartisanship instead of your approach of "take no prisoners". If you and your "US" group (NOT U.S. Group) keep trying to tribal-ize the 2nd Amendment into a political litmus test, your "US" group will find yourselves goaded into your "own" confined corner. There is a bigger picture than your "US" group recognizes.

There are no winners & losers in this America, and if your "US" group fails to recognize that reality, that is your "US" group's choice, and not mine.

Long live the 2nd Amendment for ALL of the people, not just the "US" group. Give a little to preserve a little. Just sayin' moderator Chad. We 2nd Amendment Democrats live & post here too.

The 1994 AWB was 52-48. Was the filibuster cut off?

The 1994 AWB was part of the very large Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994.
The Act had a lot of tough anti crime and violence measures. It had tough sentencing and violence against women provisions.
The Senate version was written by then Senator Joe Biden.
The bill was passed by a bi partisan vote.
95 Yes; 4 No; and one not voting.

“And then they came for me . . . “

Edit: I know both of Missouri's Senators are solidly pro 2A, would never support or vote for these resolutions, and would actively lobby against them, but I left messages anyway . . .

Here in Oregon, any call or email to a Senator or Representative falls on deaf ears unless you're calling to support funding for the preservation of whales or research on solar powered bicycles. It's not even worth the time. All we elect here anymore are leftists. Very frustrating. If it will kill jobs or remove our rights, they will vote for it.

Like in Washington, 3 counties dictate to the whole state.

Majority rule with minority rights protections (aka Bill of Rights).

Last time I checked, the Bill of Rights included the 2nd Amendment, and it has been infringed well before my time.

By the time we need the 2nd, it may well have been infringed into nothing, and we will have nothing. Join the political fight now, or the bloodshed later.

This may be the beginning of the 2nd war of Northern Aggression, and/or a renewed reconstruction effort.

How do you figure the bills will fail in the Senate? Senate is 50/50 split with the VP having the tie breaking vote.

Because the rules of the senate are different. You need 60 votes to pass a bill outside of reconciliation. Also, it is likely Joe Manchin and Krystin Sinema will be pro gun votes in spite of being Democrats. So, if they are your senators PLEASE do write them as it will have an effect on them!

We can hope it doesn't make it through the Senate. Of course, there might be another convenient shooting.

Best backup is to get it tied up in court.

you need fifty one votes to pass a bill in the senate unless a filibuster is invoked. a filibuster cannot be invoked during reconciliation.

Democrats are talking of rules changes for filibusters to go back to requiring a senator to actually be at the podium talking throughout the filibuster. They could hand it off to another senator but a senator must continue talking throughout a filibuster.

The other rule change they are talking about is requiring 40 other senators being present to vote at all times in order for the filibuster not to be closed. presently you need 60 votes to overcome a filibuster. the change would be that you would need 41 senators present and voting to continue the filibuster at all times or else it would be voted on to be closed.

These changes would help to limit filibusters, for obvious reasons. Senators are not going to want to have to talk and stay present for days on end for every single bill that is brought forward.

This legislation is just a backdoor attempt to get information to be used at a later date. I have sent my concerns to my House and Senate Reps accordingly. There are a lot of people who ended up under authoritarian regimes by compromising and being reasonable. Appeasement doesn't work, ask Neville. The folks behind these have published their intent, again ask Neville. I mean come on guys, how can you not reach out and make your voice heard, regardless of how they react. That is the American way. If we don't we might end up in a place where we can't some day.
