Mystery Gun- What is it?

"but where it travelled after leaving Springfield is still being established...".

Seven years and change later it's safe to presume Scotland Yard is not participating in this investigation.

Next time maybe hire a Pinkerton.

A most distinguished gentleman from the S&W community is talking w/ the owner of the MG. Not my place to spread rumors, but it wasn't built in a Pakistani cave. Sorry for the cryptic double speak- but I do not want to spoil anything.

Mike

8 years later. Anybody want to bet the supposed mystery gun ended up in some private collection and we won't see hide nor hair of it until the estate sale?

Either that or it's a confirmed mill run knockoff and the owner isn't talking about it any more.

Thanks for reviving an old thread, that I wouldn't have otherwise seen. Kept me entertained for hours, during a slow night at work. Very informative.

Best story, read the whole damn thing, but.......

Worst ending ever!

Can't argue that. I kept opening the next page thinking THIS would be the page where we learned for sure what it was, or got some good pics. I guess those pics were never used for an article? Or it isn't online? Assume if it was, someone would have linked it.

It's like when George Costanza got into the secret super model hangout. Took everyone to see it and it was gone.

Along the same vein, da mayor from Do the Right Thing, "Doctor, those that'll tell don't know, and those that know won't tell."

Anywho, the OP hasn't posted in this forum for close to seven yrs and his compatriot Fast Eddy hasn't in five yrs.

All that's left are regulars/semi-regulars und the occasional traveler on the road less traveled to ponder...

The first post on this ninth page: 03-04-2014

If you wish for another mystery to solve take a gander at the engraving on this .32 HE Mod 1903 4th change from 1910. One of 6,374. from that change, that has a couple of distinct features in the engraving.

2ND MODEL 1903

At roughly 4:30 from S&W TM the floral vine has a collar much as a napkin ring. That probably was a signature from whomever the engraver may be.

Im Back!!

Hello Folks-

Where to start-

I have been busy w/ other endeavors and have neglected my brothers and sisters on this forum. It seems that my lack of participation has negatively impacted my credibility based on someone’s recent post. Oh well!
It seems others have gone to the dark side and imagined all kinds of nefarious plotting.

The simple truth is that the owner of this gun is a nice, down to earth guy who doesn’t care if he found the “Holy Grail”. This gun was brought to my attention because of my passion for old Smiths through Greg at Eddy’s Shooting Sports. I asked permission from the owner to share this gun with you for info and answers in our continuing quest on our mutual journey in all things- Smith & Wesson.

On this journey, I talked w/ members with connections to the Star Chamber and was advised to be cautious and wary regarding the provenance of this gun.
Forum experts initially called this gun a fake- need more info, pics, measurements, thread dimensions, etc. Then ownership came into question. The Star Chamber wanted it back. I was given back channel preliminary info that this gun had some provenance. Like you, I waited for the info to surface- No Joy!!

Greg and I were asked to encourage the owner to surrender the gun temporarily for study. We were led to belief that the Arsenal wanted to study it. When the owner personally contacted the Arsenal, they had no record of the gun or correspondence associated with it.

We were on a quest for information and providence of this gun, not to value it. Over the life of this thread, the owner stayed true to himself. He has a piece of history that unfortunately will be his alone. He has no intention of selling it. Who knows where this gun will be in decades to come. I haven’t spoken to the owner since Covid became the “Game of Thrones”. I hope he is well.
I salute the members who have endured and enjoyed this quest and I hold dear the many conversations I had w/ members OTR.

Cheers,

Mike

Hey, thanks for the update! Pretty neat gun no matter what the story.

Twelve years on, I thought I might stir the pot and necro post. Haven't heard from the owner of the mystery gun in a very long time. Who knows where we stand. Sure would be interesting to read a verified history of it.....
