I’ve wanted a 5906 with the big adjustable sights (and a round trigger guard) ever since I rewatched the X-Files series a few years ago. If you know the show, The 5906 features prominently in season 3 as the sidearm of agents Scully and Mulder. And, of course it has the big, sexy rear sights.

In any case, I finally grabbed one at a good price (seller still has some in stock—not sure of rules for posting links, though).

I dialed the windage in so the rear sight blade was centered… but I also noticed that the sight housing itself (the thing with the silver “wings”) is actually a bit off center.

My question is… is it worth trying to (or even possible to) center the housing or should I just dial the sight blade over a bit? I thinking the latter. But just wanted to get an “expert” opinion.

Thanks.

I’ll bet JohnHL knows! I’m guessing that you’ll need to dissect the rear sight first and then perhaps there is a set screw under it and finally that you may need to drift that housing itself as if it were a fixed sight. However, that’s my guess, I truly don’t know.

Then WHY would I post?! :D Well I’m here to say that you titled this thread “5905”, and I was intrigued. The 5905 is a rare bird and that’s what I had thought you were chasing.

Oh, geez. Sorry about that. That's what I get for typing on my phone.

I'd love to have a 5905. It would be nice complement to my 6904. I've seen them come up online every once in a long while. Come to think of it, I actually just saw a 4505 for sale... but, you know, rules. Al Pacino used a 4505 in the movie Insomnia. Good flick.

I think your take on removing the sight housing is pretty much right, based on what I've seen. I'm just thinking... if the housing (the wings) are screwed in (which they are)... they probably couldn't be repositioned, because the screw holes wouldn't line up. Or maybe I'm thinking about that the wrong way...

I see nobody took that bet. :D

You're right. I do know.

The rear sight base (the thing with the silver "wings") fits into a dovetail on the slide and is retained by the rear sight base screw.

If the screw is there and tight, the base should be centered.

The adjustable sight would need to be removed to check, and that involves depressing the two pivot pins on either side of the sight while not letting any springs and pins go flying.

More details upon request.

John

Remove the sight inside a clear plastic bag, a gallon ziplock bag will work.

Those plungers are really small.................

Might want to correct title.
Sent you an email.
Best, Ed

Is there a way I can change it?

Apparently I’m illiterate lately—there’s a typo in my reply to Ben Kenobi, too. Should be “wanted” not “had.”

Among other impulse buys, I bought one yesterday...Even with night sights, although they are burned out...I'd rather have the square trigger guard personally...I never watched the X Files, but I hear it was a pretty good show......Ben

Nice. Congrats. Something about hefting that solid chunk of steel that inspires confidence. At some point, I need to get a 4506-1. But one step at a time.

And yeah, X-Files was a great show. Plus, Season 3 has some pretty good S&W product placement.

Oh you definitely need a 4506-1 in your life, add on a 4566 as well. They are probably my favorite 3rd generation models so far. I love my 10mm's too but the 45's just feel perfect.

I have a 6904 that is being converted so I can own it (longer barrel due to our wonderful barrel length law here) so I'll see how I like that more compact 9mm. Congrats on the 5906!

I agree on 4506-1. I’ve held one. And I own a 645–which shoots great and has been 100% reliable. But something about 4506-1’s aesthetic and overbuilt presence just appeals to me.
