Infrastructure Bill Includes Per-Mile Road Tax Test That Will Track Drivers' Travel
Americans may one day pay less at the pump, but more as their car's odometer climbs.

Infrastructure Bill Includes Per-Mile Road Tax Test That Will Track Drivers' Travel

....The bill specifically notes that this mileage information can be tracked via third-party OBD-II devices, OEM-collected telematic data, information from insurance companies, a smartphone app, or "any other method that [Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg] considers appropriate." It doesn't address provisions for the privacy of this data, nor how it will keep the information safe from bad actors, or even prohibit the sale of the data to non-government entities....

For years I've wanted a method to determine Texas Auto reregistration fees based on actual road use, rather than a set fee based on other factors. Those that drive very little have to pay the same as those that literally live behind the wheel. BUT at the federal level, NO WAY am I in favor of providing any additional monies for anything the government wants. So, I guess their desire for a tax windfall won't get anything from this old grump.

The pay at the pump gas tax used to provide some equity with respect to user fees - the more gas you use the more you pay for your miles and wear and tear on roads. Two things are at work against having a stable Highway Users Tax Fund: increases in gas mileage mean more miles/less revenue and the move toward gas free motors mean even less revenue. Plus, the federal gas tax hasn't been raised since about 1993 and isn't likely to ever be raised again. Tracking mechanisms are touted as a way to determine vehicle miles traveled. Over the road trucks are quite automated this way. Like it or not, this is probably coming.

How many people in NYC, LA, and the District of Corruption own and drive a car?
Rural and mid-America are going to take it in the shorts again.

A "for instance," I see you're in Wyoming,
a state with very low to no taxes. Yet the
state ranks 12th in having a budget
of 31.51% relying on federal assistance.

You mention the District of Columbia, but
its reliance on federal assistance for its
budget is 23.97%.

Could it be that people in NYC and LA
are helping carry your load of services?

This tax.....will increase the theft/siphoning of vehicles.....last time fuel crept up to five bucks a gal here in OKc....my locked fuel cap did not save me....the creep....just punched the plastic tank...(2005 Sierra)....got what they wanted...cost me 900 bucks to repair/replace the tank...

I know who did it...but could not prove it.....

Percentages alone are misleading.
How much is each of the total budgets?
How many dollars is each entity getting as federal assistance?

How many federal dollars per resident might be a better comparison
.

This is only secondarily about revenue. It's really about control. Killing the suburbs and forcing people into urban living is the objective. Same thing with "self-driving" cars. They sell it as safety, but controlling where and when you can travel is the ultimate objective.

What services? LOL! Guys out at the ranch drive around 50 miles a day checking cattle and windmills and never see a public road.

Speaking of roads. County dirt roads might get graded just before elections if there is a Commissioner up for re-election.

Prairie fire? Neighbors with wet funny sacks and steel brooms until the county fire department figures how get to you.

Law enforcement? Never get off the pavement without a GPS location to find you. Hold BGs at gunpoint until they arrive.

We won't even talk about property taxes.
