New S&W Bullpump Shotgun Just Announced!

Bullpups are not my cup of tea.

I find it amazing that American manufacturers are ignoring the conventional pump shotgun market. As I stated in the recent 870 thread, import restrictions and the perpetual issues with the Remington brand have completely handed Mossberg the market here (especially when it comes to defensive/riot shotguns).

It sure would be nice to see another American manufacturer produce a regular pump shotgun with a full length mag tube and a 18-20" barrel. Hopefully, the incoming Roundhill 870s will be decent, and they will market the 870 Police Magnum to compete with the 590a1 series.

Nobody wants one. Everybody now wants a magazine fed AR or bull pup style 12 gauge . . .

If that was the case Mossberg shotguns would not have been sold out (and selling for well above MSRP) on online auction sights over the last year. There is still a market there, and companies are foolish to let Mossberg have a monopoly.

My KS7 is fun, cycles mini shells just fine and holds 11 of them in the tube. The KSG was too cumbersome and I prefer the simplicity of the KS7.

I am a little surprised S&W went this direction, but can see the reason why. With a lot of American made shotguns hard to find during Covid, the junky imports have flooded the market. Guns tailored in design to your modern shooter.

I was glad when Mossbergs and Remingtons started showing back up in stores. I have no interest in this gun, but I do hope they sell as many as they can. I just wish the gun would have been something along the lines of what Colt had done with the Python and Andaconda.

Peckerhole free revolvers, and some real metal autos would have been nice.

Brownell's is taking pre-orders for $1099 SMITH & WESSON M&P 12 BULLPUP 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN | Brownells

I'll likely get one when they drop to @ $900. KelTec KSG doesn't take chokes without an adapter, and then you just added about 3-4 inches more out front. The IWI Tavor bullpup is super cool, but heavy like the M&P 12. 3 tubes, 5 rds each. Semi auto, but can't feed mini shells.

Im a shotgun person.Have over 50 of them in various forms. I own 2 KSGs, one DP12 and a GFY1 for bullpups. The S&W resembles the KSG the most. The extra 2lbs of weight (and same capacity) is a negative. The cross bolted safety looks very vulnerable to being accidently bumped to the on position.Ill have to handle/fire one before making a decision to buy or not..but I don't see a reason to look for one.

I have had a KSG for several years and like it a lot. Photo below. Did a lot of accessorizing on it, which I'm sure will happen with the S&W. The video I watched on YouTube on TFB TV was clearly shilling for S&W. The guy had a ton of issues, mostly loading the magazines.

From what I saw, the S&W is essentially the same thing as the KSG, but several of the things that S&W changed they changed for the worse. The magazine switch requires moving the hands from significantly away from operating position, while the KSG is just ahead of the magazine port. The S&W looks like a bear to load, while the KSG is pretty easy. And you better put a handguard on the S&W because someone is going to try to get fast with racking the slide and end up with their hand in front of the muzzle when they touch one off.

The only improvement I saw with the S&W over the KSG was the thumb safety and the grip. The AR-like thumb safety is a good call, while the KSG is a typical shotgun-like push button. The grip on the S&W is nice with the switch-out options, but the KSG feels ok.

As to those who think the screw-in choke tubes are an improvement, they're really not. This is a defensive shotgun, not something for the field or going out to shoot trap. With the pick of the right load, the cylinder bore is perfectly fine. I use now-discontinued Federal Tactical Low Recoil #1 Buck Flight Control, and my patterns out to 25 yards are perfect for the use the KSG will get. Those photos are below.

People will buy because it says S&W, but they would get a better gun with the KSG and have a few hundred left over for accessories.

I wondered when someone was going to point out the lack of need for screw in chokes. I became a Combat Shotgun Instructor in 1988. Never have I seen or felt the need for changing the choke on my 870 with a 20 inch barrel. We used 00 buck for anything out to 25 yards, over that we used slugs. Nothing fancy, just off the shelf ammo. The only real value that I can see in the bullpup design is a tactical one in moving around in a structure.

AJ, the short design is definitely nice. The KSG is 1.7 inches shorter than the M&P-12.

Not to pile on, but I forgot to mention the weight difference. The M&P-12 is 8.3 pounds empty, while the KSG is 6.9 pounds empty. The nearly 1.5 pounds may not seem like much, but wait until you add 15 rounds of buckshot. The KSG already feels pretty heavy to me fully loaded. The M&P-12 will be a handful.
