Which to Sell: Sig 220 or 4566TSW (Hint: Not the S&W)

So I've got 2 very nice full size .45s -- a Sig P220 and S&W 4566TSW (plus a 4513TSW, CS45, and Remington 1911 R1S).

I ain't shooting them all so I figure on selling either the Sig of Smith.

The Sig is a great gun and I just had the factory do the trigger work on it. But the Smith's trigger is 90% as good, it's all stainless, and, ok, I'm a S&W fanboy.

So my basic inclination is to sell the Sig. Wadda ya think?

My real problem is: what to do with the money? As in what gun, in .45 (or 9 or 40), should I replace it with? Don't need another carry .45. The Remington 1911 is enough 1911 for me. I've also got (full disclosure here), a 745, so I don't need a great SA type pistol; and I have a Colt 1917 and Smith 625 so another 45 revolver is out. (And have nice 9s and 40s.) And I buy shooters not collectibles.

I've been amassing guns over a whole bunch of years, but I still feel a bit guilty with my embarrassment of riches. My dilemma, about what to buy next, sounds a bit self-indulgent, but I wouldn't mind hearing what folks here would do with the proceeds of a Sig P220 sale.

My Sig P220 would be one of the last pistols I'd part with. The Colt 1911a1 would go before it.

Yeah of the two I'd sell the Smith first. The 220 is an excellent handgun.

If it were me I’d keep the P220! Although I have a 1006, I’ve never had much use for Smith autos, metal or plastic.

I’d keep the Sig, but I’d probably keep the S&W too…

I already have 3 of the Sig 220 family (one 245 and two 220's). If you're selling a 220 in 45 I may have a home that will show that gun the love it deserves!

I would not be selling the SIG.

Truthfully I would not be selling the Smith either.

At a very early age my Father taught me that the secret to having a good collection is to not sell things. Buy 3+ nice pieces each year and in ten years you have a very robust collection

You ask . . . "what to do with the money?"

Well we know you like 45s, so I would suggest the Smith & Wesson 845.

The mags for your 745 will work in it, so mags should not be an issue

With the Model 52 being the King of the Hill, the Model 845 may be the second finest target auto loader to ever be produced by the Company.

The Model 745 is a nice production gun with a single action trigger. Nothing more is done to achieve real accuracy from it.

Once you shoot the 845 you will see what the Performance Center is really capable of doing.

Me too. I had a Remington R1S, and it was a nice gun, but the 220 is in a whole different league. The only 1911 I have is an Army issue 1911-A1 from the CMP. That scratches my 1911 itch. I’d never part with that one due to the history of it but I sold the Remington without a thought before I even fired a shot from it. And there’s no real need to sell one to buy another. Sometimes I just sell a gun because I lose interest in it and don’t buy another. I figure it’s a credit for the next one I see that I really do want.

And I wouldn’t sell that 4566 either. I have a standard 4566 that I love.

I have a W German Sig 220........ that will shoot cloverleafs at 50ft.
It replace a 1911 as my carry .45 in 1989.

I also have an Earnest Langdon Model all steel 220 and a brace of 245 Compacts.

P-series Sigs are great guns!

Keep the Sig!!!!!! and the 4566 I've got one of those too!

For a S&W forum a lot of Sig love! Did not expect that. Unfortunately for the OP I’m in the same camp when it comes to semi auto pistols. I’d keep the Sig. With the craziness of the gun market with values shifting considerably in some cases, you don’t know when your sitting on gold! Yes you could get great money for that Sig right now and apply it to something else but if there isnt anything that is calling you immediately i wouldn’t sell. Guns and ammo in the safe right now are some of the most valuable commodities in my opinion.

You are already on the right track by keeping the Remington. The only thing I don't care for about my Remington R1 is the big poster board on the slide. The pistol is a great gun. I also have a ST P220 and a NITRON P220. I would not sell either especially not the P220ST.

Anyway, good luck with your decision.

Never been a big Sig guy myself, so I would say keep the 4566 only because it's my favorite 45 and I certainly wouldn't mind adding another!

Get them both in hand shoot them side by side see what happens, that will tell you what you need to do next

The question may as well be, "Should I pluck out my right eye, or my left eye?"

Perhaps the best answer is... "Neither."

I like s&w pistols, factory armourer trained on 1006's and 3rd gens in general....worked on after inspecting over 5000 sig p226''.....was a match armourer who built hardball guns for Marine Corps' shooting team and would let my P220 go last...actually sold my 1911's....you will regret selling your Sig.

I faced this same decision a few months ago. I sold my 4566 in favor of my P220 ST. I miss the 4566 so I'm suggesting you keep both. I also have a Beretta Cougar 45, HK 45C and a HK USP compact stainless 45. I find myself shooting my 9's more often.

I've never been a fan of S&W semi-auto pistols, although I owned a few. All are long gone. The Sig P220 is a terrific pistol. The two I currently have are this West German model and the S/S Match Elite with a 5" barrel. Since you're asking, sell the Smith.
