.41 Magnum; it is like 10mm Auto, but for adults with taste and class.

.41 Special isn't a SAAMI approved cartridge, but there is brass available from Starline, and loads available for it in various places on the web.

No. M57 and M58 (and later, the M657) is all you get. There is a M520, a fixed-sight .357 Magnum with a tapered barrel and shrouded extractor rod; the originals are rare birds, a LE special order that fell through and then sold to the public.

Thank you for the info.

Model 520.

I had both the M58 and the M520. I thought they made a nice pair.

I sold the M520 last year.

Years and years ago I really wanted a Model 57, 6 inch barrel, blued. I could not find a Model 57 in any barrel length or finish. I settled for a Model 29-3, 6 inch, nickel finish.

I presently have no 58 or 57 S&W. Don't particularly want a 41mag. Why? They are like a 16g shotgun. Not enough smaller than 12g or bigger than a 20g to fool with. Same with 41mag in relation to 44mag & 357 mag. Also bullet and ammo choices are a lot fewer than 44s.
The 41magnum is dying, it just doesn't know how to depart gracefully.

I like em both! Hand load my 10mm for 1230 fps, its no slouch either. Both beautiful in their own right.

Don't like the 41 mag, it's the Dirty Harry syndrome with the 44 mag.?
The 41 mag wasn't in a movie yet.

I had to laugh. Dad just gave me his 16 gauge bought new in 1951 - he's taken pheasants, ducks, geese, deer, and all kinds of varmints with it and never needed more.

When 38-40 ammo and components are getting discontinued the 41 mag will only have 85 years left.

I wish I'd known that, the M520 is my Grail Gun. To me, it's perfect. The tapered barrel doesn't make it look "chunky", but the extractor shroud gives it some elegance. The fixed sights are all business. I sort of wish the M58 had been given an extractor shroud.

Agree completely! I Shoot 16 ga., 41 Mag and 8mm Rem Mag. They perform and components are readily available. I shoot more with more popular calibers but those are favorites.

I also had to laugh at the spellcheck goof. What's the limit on 'peasants' in your state?

There is nothing wrong with a 16g or 41mg. I'm saying that unless you get one for free, why go with the odd balls. On the other side of things I could never figure out why 38Super didn't catch on here in USA. More potent than 38sp or 9mm. The 40S&W is gasping and 10mm is close behind.
One of the early gun writers said, there is no bad cartridges only bad guns.

It does a job on whitetails too!

If memory serves, it was 21.8 grains of H110 over 210 grain XTP hollow point.

Model 657 no dash, magna-ported and action job by previous owner. I put the JM grips on.

48 yards DA shot from a tree stand. She folded up like a lawn chair. Bullet was found just under the hide offside shoulder. Bullet broke both shoulders going through.

I do love the 41 mag, but fail to see how one can knock the 10mm in comparison. Maybe if all you're considering is revolvers, I can see that.
No reason to give up either!
Nor the 38 Supers, or the 16 gauges. In fact, I suppose my safe looks like the misfit toy room from that old Christmas movie! There's certainly no Glocks in there.
And, I probably don't fit in much better than the firearms I keep. But they're good company.

S&W has made other revolvers with the tapered 4" barrel, shrouded ejector and fixed sights. But that is for another thread.

Here's the other 4" .357 Magnum that I sold that has a
shrouded ejector and tapered barrel. Just no fixed sights.

This was my pre-27 that was shipped to H.H. Harris Co back in April 1957.

I sold this one for almost 4-times what I sold my M520 for.

I was in my LGS just the other day. A younger patron and I struck up a conversation. We were talking about 1911's, the virtues of 9mm, .40 & .45 and such when he asked me what my favorite caliber was to shoot. I seriously deadpanned ".41 magnum". His response was a dumbfounded "Umm, hmmm, I've never even heard of that" (the owner of the shop knows me and knows my love for the .41 started chuckling). I responded with "I kinda figured, when you get a chance read up on it, it's the best round that everybody let slip away".

That then lead us into conversations of decades old gun goodness and all the things he and I both missed out on.

Bought a new 58 in the 70's but sold it way back then. :( 35 years later I replaced it and added 57s and more 58s. I have really enjoyed owning and shooting them over the years.

As for the 10mm, I wish I had my 310 Nightguard back. i modified it with "the plug". Shooting 40 S&W (short and weak) through it was a disappointment though.
