I recently proved (again) that I am, indeed, smarter than all 3 of mine. And believe it, they test me constantly. They will pro'lly get me sooner or later, but not yet. Not just yet.

Our new country home has the "farm house" decor. As part of the design features several of the doors are "sliders". They are suspended on a rail by wheels mounted on the top of the door.
The door to the utility room is one of them.

I was cleaning the deep sink in there yesterday and had the slider that lets in off the hallway closed as I was in and out the back door a lot. The boys are ever on the look out for an opportunity to escape. This time they teamed up and got the slider open enough to make good their escape.

Out the door and less than 50' from the woods. I'm in no shape to try to run down one cat, let alone 3 of them. I some how managed to get them all in before they fell victim to any copperheads or coyotes etc. I'm not so sure I could ever do that again. But it is kind of unsettling to realize that they now know how to work together.

Y'all wish me luck....

At some point in my running around a mental picture of one of those gate-latch & eye things popped into my mind. Now all three of the sliders are set up to secure them if necessary. Utility room, master bathroom and pantry.

And so end another day in the life of a cat wrangler.

Just remember that you locked the sliders next time you go scooting thru the house. There is an ice pack waiting to be used.

Had a cat early on that loved to climb trees and wouldn't come down. Then buddy said he had never seen a cat skeleton in a tree. Come to think about it neither had I. Problem solved.

mine will slide the screen door on the patio open enough to exit. soon it will be cold enough that we won't leave it open, foiling their plans for escape.

Our calico cat knows how to turn the water on in the shower upstairs. It is to a point that when we leave the house for an extended period, we have to close the bathroom door or use a plastic clamp on the faucet to prevent her from doing it. She hasn't figured out how to turn any other faucets on, just that one.

Yes, that's her photo in my avatar. She can't be trusted.

Walkin Jack, don't worry to much about snakes, cats will kill them. That
is unless they have been mutilated by declawing. I saw a copperhead
trying to strike one but the cat was to fast. Being cold blooded snakes
can only go so long before they tire, that's when the cats pounce.
Yes my 18 year old cat is probably smarter, I carry food to her twice/day
take care of all her needs. But she likes or at least tolerates me.

Certain towns in Colorado have outlawed lever type exterior doors. No, not cats but ... bears have learned the key. Results can be unfavorable. They haven't figured out the round ones as of yet, but stay tuned.

I saw a video a while back from a surveillance camera in the back of a vet's office where they keep cats and dogs overnight in small cages with deadbolt latches on the tops of the doors on the outside. This white cat stuck it's paw through the bars on the door, reached up to the dead bolt by feel ( it was out of his field of view ), worked it's paw around until it found the knob, lifted it up. It then groped and pulled at it until the bolt retracted all the way and released the door. Cat pushed the door open and escaped.
Took all of about 15 seconds.

BTW, have you seen the new Chevy Silverado pickup commercial with the dumb pickup owner and the cat named " Walter"?
Watch it in YouTube if you can. The version that is running on TV now has been shortened a little bit, as they are prone to do after an ad has run for a couple of weeks.
HILARIOUS!
