We've all been there…. Hey do you mind if I can borrow xxxx to use????

And I'm sure we've all been burned before as well doing so. My younger days when I didn't have much or much to loose I was more willing to loan things out. Now as I've gotten older not so much. One guy used my cherry picker years ago which was in perfect order. It came back with a couple casters ripped off and missing pins for the legs.

In time I've also learned friends are quality over quantity. Now there is a select handful or less of people that can borrow my stuff. Point of the post? A brother from another mother wanted to borrow my trailer (which wasn't cheap). Needed to haul a skid steer he rented. Ok fine, and I needed to use one anyway and that was my return. The trailer is fine and more than likely come back with a fresh bath and certainly not destroyed or a scuff on it.

If people value your friendship they will value what you let them use!

I don't own a pick up truck any more so that's out. I really don't have anything here for anyone to borrow. The one thing that people always wanted was "Hey, can you look at my (furnace, A/C, plumbing leaks, electrical what ever?). NO! When I retired last year I gave all my tools to my son. He's in the trade and lives over in Beaver County. Oh....(cry, sniff), well I thought maybe you could ....NO!!! I CAN'T. No more free service calls.
The only thing I can loan out is me. Unless you're, never mind. NO!

Loaned out our first roto-tiller - came back ruined.
Loaned out a yard seeder - the same, ruined.
Loaned a 10/22 to an associate pastor for a youth rifle team - he got divorced and disappeared with the rifle and lost his full-time job (and family).

No more.

There is a very short list of people I'll loan anything to. My sons and maybe one or two close friends. I've learned from past mistakes.

NEVER, EVER loan anybody a chain saw. I've heard more horror stories about that than any other item. If the borrower somehow escapes major bodily harm to themselves, they WILL ruin it.

The answer is.......... most of the time. If they ask to borrow something that I am hesitant to loan, I will usually just do the job or help them do what they need the item for. This way I assure the item to be potentially borrowed does not get ruined, the job gets done correctly and I don't piss-off a friend, neighbor or whom ever is asking.

I also have enough tools (I'm a major tool nut) so that I have duplicates, triplicates, or more of most items they ask to borrow if it is a tool, I'll lend out the least valuable to me. There have even been times that I have so many of an item I will just give one to them (if a close friend).

The one item I refuse to lend to anyone is a chain saw! Just too dangerous to someone who never used one before. I will usually just cut up what they need to get done - everyone is happy and safe.

Lent a brand new Husquvarna Ranger x stroke chain saw to a guy cleaning my fence line. So I'm into $120 for new bar and chain. The other parts are about $70. So H--l no will I ever again loan anything gas, or electric powered to anyone. Just ordered some new parts for the messed for my Husky chain saw I was stupid to loan out.Looks close to $200 for parts. I can install them so that saves a lot. Frank

Case by case basis, people show themselves to be unreliable, undependful, "forgetful"-no! One Marine Reservist mechanic told me whenever anyone wanted to borrow tools he always said "ID card!"

Sometimes to real good friends that would do the same for me. Or to neighbors that have helped me out in times of need.
At deer camp a couple years ago a young man fresh out of the army with not a pot to p*$$ in needed a cooler to take deer meat home in. I had a old cooler that was not all that much so I lent it to him. I just saw it at camp again a week ago he is still using it. However this young man with a strong back and youthful energy has loaded deed deer for me moved my stands assists me in any way asked. I consider it a small investment in my future. I jokingly asked him about our cooler the other day and he said here take it back and I said nope the rent was being paid up to date.
As a rule kinfolks no.
