Do you loan stuff to people?

Can't remember the last time I asked to borrow something from anyone outside my immediate family. And vice versa. I would though if anyone asks.

One AF mechanic told me they have to mark their tools so if someone drops one into an engine they can't pull the "Who Me?" Bit.
The Leatherman and MiniMaglite I carry daily have my initials on them, makes them easy to get back.

Had small signs in service trucks : No Tools For Loan
Used to tell people they sell it at: Sears all day long.
Found my Farm Boss in the rain that was loaned out.
No, No, Never borrow as well, will rent it or just buy it.

About 10 years ago this week I loaned a rifle to a young man so he
could go deer hunting. He killed a big buck with nice rack and posted, pictures of himself, buck and my rifle. A couple months later he claimed someone stole the rifle, but he would pay me. Haven't seen the rifle or
money since.
I'm not a slow learner so he is on the do not loan list. I figure everyone
gets one chance to prove their worth.

I just say no!! I'll come over and use My tools, or You can come over and I'll use My tools. If I have several of something I will give it rather than loan it. Never a powered anything or a go bang of any kind.

I have learned that the fastest way to get rid of unwanted friends is to loan them something. Many believe that if they can actually talk you out of something, that you don't want/need it anymore. My practice has always been if borrowing, to immediately return it in better condition than receiving. That includes changing the oil after using a log splitter, tightening the muffler on same, installing proper spark plug, cleaning or replacing air filter. This act made a 30 pull start into a first pull running motor. Other X friends think that when borrowing a atv trailer, they must bend the axle, then with a come along, bent the tongue trying to fix it, then it is my fault that they had to buy new tires to bring it home tires bald.

Loaning stuff

Many years ago, it became apparent to me, the vast number of tools that I'd loaned, that had never been returned, and the condition of the few that were returned.

After much thought, and research, on the matter, I came to this conclusion; Coming to me, to borrow tools, instead of a hardware, was much preferable to my many borrowing friends, reasons are; No cash outlay needed, no upkeep required, Closer than a hardware, no time limit on their use. Much of the time, I was required to use those tools for them, to get their jobs done.

A neighbor/friend, stated, that "after he had a borrowed tool for three days it belonged to him". His workshop clearly showed the truth of his statement. I still have, on display, the only tool that he ever returned; a 3" hole-saw, that he wanted to exchange for another size.

The borrowing rules that I established, back in the day, were as follows; Never lone my wife. Never loan a gun. I've never loaned ether, and never will. Life has rendered me extremely pessimistic, and the only one that I'll loan anything too is my son.

That folks are my candid opinions of loaning stuff.

One of my cousins asked to borrow my scoped 03A3 deer rifle for his son. I lent it to him without any concern. My little cousin ended up bagging a deer at 225 yards with my gun. I got my gun back with no issues.

My cousin's father (my uncle who now lives 4 blocks from me) lent me his Model 70 back in 1966 that I shot my first deer with.

Had a friend that we used to swap or loan guns for sometimes months at the time. He was great guy and would treat your stuff just as you would. Sadly he died several years ago.
So now I don't loan or borrow anything Having accumilated enough guns/tools/stuff etc to satisfy my needs.

I'll loan friends or family just about anything - at least once.
But if they don't either return it in a reasonable time frame, in its original condition, or at least offer to pay to replace it when lost or damaged, the next time they ask the answer will be NO.

Your post got me to remembering. I loaned a Remington 700 in 222 to a friend 35 plus years ago. Every time I go to visit my friend, I ask about my rifle. He reassures me that it is warm and cozy in his gun closet. Nice to know it is well taken care of. Unlike so many fellow members here, sadly I will only ever have 2 grandchildren. To say they are spoiled is an understatement. My oldest grandson has "borrowed my Marlin 336, Winchester model 12 in 20 gauge, my Savage 99, and after this last visit, my K-38. My other grandson has "borrowed my Remington 30 Express, my 1903 Springfield, and my Bearcat. Quite an accomplishment considering they are only 10 and 13 years old.

Long story , short . I loaned a 4" DeWalt Grinder to my neighbor . After two months I went into his storage room and found it sitting on a shelf . I took it back and never said a word about it .

Rarely . . . and even then it depends. Depends on who is asking and what they want to borrow.

Some things I never loan out, like my tractor or trailers or my truck. I'd rather come do the deed for them with my stuff than loan them my stuff.

Yes, people who believe in "adverse possession", "somebody stole it", have a smart alecky attitude-they're off my list.
