Things you need to know if you move to the South

Are you suggesting Maryland is Southern?

Where I grew up in Md them would be fightin' words. Delaware was southern too...at least where all of my relatives over there lived. Only reason Md didn't vote out of the Union was cause yankee troops arrested the state legislature so they couldn't vote. They had riots in Baltimore just like recently. 'Cept the yankee troops killed a whole bunch of people rioting...not like today. Unique idea huh?

So Sorry - Ski is not a Hardcore Down South drink.
It’s made in Kentucky - a Border State.
It apparently has regional distribution, reported to be popular in Evansville, IN.
I never even heard of it until those Kentucky Headhunters sang about it.

Well let's all go, down to Dumas Walker
Let's all go, down to Dumas Walker
We'll get a slaw burger, fries and a bottle of Ski
Bring it on out to my baby and me…

If we are talking southern sodas then Dr Pepper bottled in Dublin Texas made with real sugar. And the other Big Red Soda. When you buy an auto in Texas and get the seat protection it will exclude Big Red Soda every time. Big Red Soda over Blue Bell Ice cream, Delicious

I encounter a similar misunderstanding here in Vegas. When I get frustrated about driving out here (not hard to do), I'll jokingly ask someone, "Where's the subway?" EVERY time I have, they try to direct me to the sandwich shop of that name...

Fortunately for me, "high limit room" is part of the lingua franca.

I looked it up: an okra is NOT a beached whale, it's some kinda plant that grows South of the Mason-Dixon Line! So there!! Yinz can't fool this Yankee (Very long.)
I like our 4 seasons in PA: almost winter, winter, still winter, and road construction.
(And I was gonna ask what kind of rig you use for something almost as big as a Mississippi catfish.)

I could never figure out the difference between "yinz" and "youinz". My in-laws used both.

The BEST fried food in the whole wide world! Home Fried Potatoes!! Some folks might say "Taters." But I know what they are. My Mother could, and now my MBH does, the best home fried potatoes for a thousand miles in any direction. They are good with anything. I've probably ate a pickup truck load, or more. If you can still walk after a pan of "taters" there might be a big ole slice of the best Lemon Pound Cake for desert.

You can thank me later,

Blessings,

Leon

What are the seasonings??? Looks really good.

I never cared for RC Cola. I loathe Dr. Pepper (which, by the way ain't bottled in Dublin anymore). Sweet tea makes me gag. Only way I'll drink tea is plain and strong with no added juices or flavorings of any kind. I do love me some fried okry, though. Grits - not my favorite. Biscuits and gravy - you betcha.

There's a local restaurant called Clear Springs. I think there are a handful of locations around Texas. Everything is fried, and everything is delicious especially their jumbo onion rings. I could make a meal just out of those onion rings.

Of course, some will argue that Texas isn't really the South, but most natives self identify as Southerners.

I did some contract work in the deep South and have seen/heard a lot of the stuff mentioned above. Some extras:

When asking directions, you might hear "go down the road a piece" which isn't the same as "a fur piece". I never got an explanation for the difference in distance. Added: just recalled "right fur piece" but didn't get any clarification on difference or if just a personal comment.

An explanation for why someone hadn't shown up: "we is commencin to prepare to git ready to go." I had to have that repeated 3 times to get it all and have treasured that excuse.

Piggly Wiggly is actually a supermarket chain.

After living in the South several years I started a question by asking "Do you reckon..."and stopped in shock. The guy I was talkin to asked what was wrong.

Piggly Wiggly is the first Self Service - Super Market type grocery store.
Founded in Memphis, TN.
My Mother was great Cook and made fantastic deserts.
But there was one Pie that she didn’t make.
That would be a Chess Pie.
But my Buddy Cecil’s Mother made it.
Usually served with a cup of Boiled Custard.
That’s Southern Egg Nog.
Turns out that Chess Pie is actually an old English recipe.
Apparently my English folks forgot how to make it!

The chess pieces must be hard on your teeth. Looks that way from the pictures of the locals, anyway.
And Oreo cookies look like checkers, only bigger...Try not to confuse the two...:p...Ben

[EDIT: You know how we know the toothbrush was invented in Arkansas?...Because if it had been invented anywhere else, it would have been called the teethbrush...I can get away with that one because my Mom was from Arkansas...:D]
