The Russians have gone in

I don't know what Zelenskyy will say to Congress but there's the text of the speech he gave this morning to our House of Commons. (Too long to quote here so you'll have to go to the National Post link)

"Can you imagine when you call your friends ... and you ask, 'Please close the sky ... please stop the bombing'.... And in return they express their deep concern'"

Regarding the press and how
well it's been covering this war,
sadly a Fox News cameraman
has been killed. He was right
on the front lines.

Pierre Zakrzewski has been in
the forefront in Iraq, Afghanistan
and Syria. He was the "go to"
guy for reporters to get the story.

Volodymyr Zelensky Says Ukraine Won't Join NATO

Newsweek reports Zelensky has said Ukraine will not be able to join NATO, one of hoodlum Putin's basic demands.

Could this be the beginning of an "off ramp" that could lead to a ceasefire and negotiations?

Early on I think it could have
been at least part of the "off
ramp" for Putin. But Putin has
gone too far and a pull out now
would be a very "red faced"
embarrassment for him.

He might settle if Russia could
keep large swaths of eastern
Ukraine and the entire coastline
for the Black Sea. At least he
might, for now.

Beemerguy,

Thanks for the WAPO article
which answered one of my
questions/puzzlements.

A week ago a drone recorded
a rocket attack on a Russian
tank/armored car column going
through a small village. The
drone showed some flashes that
indicated the rockets came from
close by.

My wonderment was where was the
Russian infantry to screen the column
and prevent such an ambush. The
answer it turns out the Russians
never did provide an infantry screen.

Armor is just targets without infantry support in todays combat. Russia looks to be finding this out, lol. Failure of the Russian armed forces is enlightening. Wonder how better the Chinese would be? China has enough men to " pave the battlefield" with bodies. Very interesting situation.

The truth about the Russian
army if it is true:

An analyst on MSNBC said
for years the generals and Putin's
friends have been stealing funds
meant for new equipment.

Hence that's why the West has
seen so many old or poorly
maintained tanks and even MREs
dating back to 2003.

I guess, then, Putin must threaten
extreme measures because he
simply doesn't have enough
conventional weaponry.

The ChiCom's did that in Korea. Human wave attacks.

Not sure if they would ever do that again in a conventional warfare battle.

Official says Russian troops take 500 hostage
The Associated Press
March 15, 2022 6:06 PM
"Russian troops seized a hospital in Mariupol and took about 500 people hostage during another assault on the southern port city late Tuesday, regional leader Pavlo Kyrylenko said.

Russians troops drove 400 people from neighboring houses into Regional Intensive Care Hospital, Kyrylenko said on the messaging app Telegram. About 100 doctors and patients also are believed to be inside, he said.

The troops are using those inside the hospital as human shields and are not allowing anyone to leave, he said.

"It's impossible to leave the hospital, they are shooting hard," Kyrylenko said.

Kyrylenko said the main building of the hospital has been heavily damaged by shelling, but medical staff are continuing to treat patients in makeshift wards set up in the basement.

He called on the world to respond to these "gross violations of the norms and customs of war, these egregious crimes against humanity."

The Ukrainian army's General Staff says Russian troops are trying to block off the city from the western and eastern outskirts of the city. "There are significant losses," it said in a Facebook post.

Was just talking to my gf across the line and her Russian mother, who is following "the events" very closely (from her home here in Canada) has highly recommended a BBC progamme callled Dateline London. She sent me a couple of links to recent editions, one from just before the invasioin began and one from March 4. I'm listening to the March 4 one now and it is chilling.

Excellent column here from New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman on some of the unexpected effects of Putin's invasion of Ukraine...it's unlocked, so you can read it...

Opinion | In Putin's War on Ukraine, Expect the Unexpected - The New York Times

Listening tonight to the news, a number of different commentators, on assorted channels, were all saying the same thing: Putin cannot win this war. The question is: When will he realize that and act accordingly?

Thanks for the Friedman column.

One thought I've had since before
the beginning of the invasion, does
Putin realize how dumb he looks
conducting meetings at 20 to 40 foot
tables with him all by himself.

It's almost like a spoof
about a twerp despot.
But of course this twerp has
6,000 nuclear warheads.
