Although I have not watched the Oscars in decades and generally could not care less about them, I did find the altercation between Chris Rock and Will Smith to be interesting. There are plenty of news reports on the issue, but in short it seems the Oscars MC, Chris Rock, made a joke about Will Smith's wife. Will Smith came up on stage and smacked Chris Rock with an open hand in the face, then returned to his seat and shouted at Chris Rock for him NOT to be talking about his wife.

In my opinion, maybe Chris Rock learned that words sometimes have consequences.

We're not interested in Hollywood, but when hubby saw this on the news, it reminded him of a neighbor who would fein laughter as he insulted people, and this comic subterfuge avoided getting him a well deserved beat down.

Publicity stunt.

Will Smith and wife have an open marriage.
His dedication to her and her’s to him is shaky at best.

I just feel really bad for the hundreds of people that had to witness that on their TV screens at home.

Believe me, anyone watching the Oscars and other movie and TV award shows will see and hear things worse than a staged publicity slap.

I have a correction to make; I now do not believe it was staged, but have since found out Smith’s wife is somewhat of a “piece of work”. It was she that initiated the open marriage thing with her husband, who she apparently badgered to accept. She must have all the power at their family, and intimidated him into slapping Rock.
Smith is a jerk, and Rock should file assault and battery charges against him.

Perhaps the greatly escalating trend towards no repercussions for your actions is turning. If it wasn't staged, making fun of a sick person deserves a smack. Although it would have been more effective with a closed fist.
