Will Smith smacks Chris Rock

Frankly, I'd like to see a few other celebrities and politicians get witch slapped for inappropriate public comments. In too many cases public comments have gone too far in the name of "entertainment".

There was a time in our history when honorable men would have dueled over insults, or even perceived insults, of one's wife. Even in a gang infested 'hood, you gots to be careful about "dis-ing" the wrong person. I'm okay with a little measured violence in the right application, while understanding that the violence could have legal consequences as well.

I saw this this morning, impossible to read the paper and avoid it. Smith's wife is suffering from alopecia and is self conscious about it. Rock's crack about "looking forward to GI Jane 2" was over the top but I don't think he meant it to harm. He got a tune up for it and a tongue lashing, I guess deservedly. I'm glad I didn't miss the single minute (the YouTube "unedited" clip is 3 minutes) the Oscars was interesting. Joe

1) If genuine, Rock’s comment was tasteless and demeaning.
2) The above notwithstanding, no excuse for assault.
3) I trust Mr Smith can do better than that.
4) Looks staged to me.
5) Aaaaaand I’ve exceeded my degree of interest.

Staged Bitch Slap...nothing more, nothing less. I've run with rough crowds in my life and just about anything is open for comic interpretation except loved ones, in some cases you might even be a little careful with ex's unless your very creative and truly funny. In boot camp nothing is sacred amongst buddies..."Thats what your mom said last night." If your aim is to hurt all bets are off.
In this modern society if your in the public eye you better have thick skin. Us older guys can remember when simply calling someone an *******. meant fighting words and giving someone the finger was grounds for a dust-up.
If Rock had pressed charges would they have charged Smith with aggravated assault?

Very smooth move on the part of WS. CR has learned a valuable life lesson. Mrs. WS has learned by public example something important about her husband. All around educational evening for all concerned. For the audience, commentators, etc., a reminder of what a man says by words and actions speaks volumes about who he considers matters. Sincerely. bruce.

They would charge him with battery - section 242 of the California Penal Code. A misdemeanor. FWIW it's not assault or assault and battery, it's just battery. Under CA law, an assault is an attempted battery. If Smith would have swung and missed, it would have been an assault - section 240 of the California Penal Code.

As a well known curmudgeon would say, "C'Mon Man!"

People in general are more and more classless and more and more "offended"

Does anybody remember Don Rickles?

This could have been handled off stage with a "You crossed the line" and a "Oh man, I'm sorry, My bad"

$0.02

I agree with most of that except, yes a lot of people remember Rickles. He is a classic icon to comedy as Sinatra is to music. He is the gold standard to insult comedy as Rodney Dangerfield is to self deprecating jokes. I know several young stand up comics and each knows Rickles and have studied his material, and maybe more importantly his delivery. Your question is like asking a musician does anybody remember Bob Dylan.

Will Smith runs a family that has open relationships some say. So all of sudden he gets butt hurt over some comment about a woman he shares with others. It could be a jealous thing especially if she got out of the limo with Chris Rock. These people have brought an all time low to television and Hollywood, and that’s pretty hard to do. Will would have gone crazy at a Don Rickles roast. Remember Foster Brooks talking about Dean Martins wife? Will Smith I don’t get no respect.

I went back and watched some of the roasts, and it was Don Rickles wife that was talked about. Watch it,nobody gets slapped.

The grossest thing I’ve seen yet is the idea that responding to words [other than a direct threat] with violence is acceptable.

Not in this country.

Our country's history is rife with such events. Ever heard of Alexander Hamilton and and Vice President Arron Burr? President Andrew Jackson had several "affairs of honor". There have been numerous fisticuffs on the floor of Congress over insults and untruths.

Words have meaning, and although I fully support the First Amendment, I also think consequences for words spoken and written are at times appropriate. It helps keep a civilized society civilized, even if it is a punch in the mouth.

A prime example, look at what has happened to totally unchecked American main stream media.

If a man slaps another man, he really wasn't that committed to the injustice......

So words YOU don’t like deserve a punch in the mouth?

When people tell you exactly who they are, I listen. Thanks.

I can't believe it wasn't staged. There has to be at least a few second delay, right? I thought that was required even on "live" broadcasts, how else could they beep out the 7 words you can't say on TV if someone goes off.

Am I just crazy talking here?
