The Russians have gone in

At this point, news reports about both the cause and extent of the damage to the "Muskva" are all over the place.
To date the Russian army's performance has not been impressive. I'm curious how the crew of the ship performed with respect to damage control efforts which require virtually all hands. Should be a good indication of training and discipline.

Watching this thuggish debacle unfold for the last 10 weeks, I wonder if the words "training" and "discipline" even exist in the Russian vocabulary?

In a sense they might be right if
they are referring to an imperial
czarist type empire envisioned by
Putin.

The Ukraine war threatens that
image and goals if Putin fails.

With a democratic government
working for the betterment of
all Russians, the country could
become an admired member of
the European community and
not treated as a pariah.

What we are seeing in Ukraine is an example of the Russian way of warfare: total devastation and destruction, with no respect for life at any level. It's how they fight. The indiscriminate murder of unarmed civilians...the rapes...the looting...is no different that what they did in Germany in 1945. If Putin vanished tomorrow (we can only hope) that culture still won't change.

This war has set Russia back decades on the world stage. Russia's neighbors will never, ever feel safe again, and nobody on this Forum will live long enough to see Russia become a respected member of the European community...

The test is coming with the offensive
in eastern Ukraine.

In a way it's also going to be a test
of Western weaponry, the ability to
stop huge forces with unique firepower
combined with Western training
and discipline.

If things go very badly for the Russians,
Putin may decid he needs to use
nuclear and chemical weapons, albeit
tactical in nature.

Even so the U.S. and NATO will be drawn
in to open confrontation with the Russians.

And many if not the majority of Americans
will remain oblivious as to what's happening.

Up until the Russians invaded Ukraine, we held out hope that Putin would "see the light", and not do it...

Now we're all hoping he'll refrain from using his WMD...

I don't like the way this feels at all... :(

How are those wonder weapons workin' for ya, Vlad?

The Russian army that rolled into Ukraine on the morning of Feb. 24 brought with it some of the world's most powerful, and indiscriminate, artillery. Now the Ukrainian army has captured at least five of these TOS-1 thermobaric rocket-launchers—and reportedly has fired one of them back at the Russians.

Serhiy Bratchuk, a spokesperson for the administration of Odessa, told Victor Kovalenko, a former Ukrainian soldier and journalist, that Ukrainian troops aimed one of their ex-Russian TOS-1s at Russian positions around Izium, in eastern Ukraine near Kharkiv, on or before April 5.

TOS-1 with its 220-millimeter "flamethrowing" rockets is a uniquely destructive system, but one barrage from one captured launcher isn't militarily significant. As a statement, however, the purported reversal—Ukraine pointing one of Russia's most fearsome weapons back at it—is striking.
Ukrainian Troops Reportedly Fired A Captured Russian Rocket Launcher ... Back At The Russians

This assumes that the Russian psyche does, or ever will, consider their country as part of Europe. I'm not convinced that they do.

I knew a veteran officer who was working with counterbattery radar in France during WWII. It has been around, and yes they should have some. Shoot and scoot, or else.
Oh, one day he reported something impossible high and fast, and it turned out to be one of the first V2s. Glad I got to meet those guys.

Counter battery locating has been around since WWI, they used large sound locating devices. From what I've heard about todays systems is almost magic. Locating systems can locate any gun as the round leaves the tube and begins its flight.
