In some ways Lake Mead's plight is reminiscent of the Aral Sea, though on a much smaller scale. The Aral Sea, though, was a natural inland sea drained by artificial means whereas Mead is an artificial lake drained by natural means.
Both are instances of humans wanting to move water to where it does not naturally want to go.
My favorite kayak and fishing hole is 300 ft deep at the dam and snakes into several narrow and steep valleys. It's about 900 acres when it's full. They've started work to raise the dam 150' as its part of Denver water. I hate to see the character of it change.
The naysayers out here have all the perfect excuses. Water used inside the home is cleaned, treated and recycled... so, Presto! There is no water crisis! But the construction just doesn't stop. Methinks it is because there is no state income tax, so more homes means more real estate tax. I could be wrong on this. Living alone, I use little water and have cut back to 2 drops in my bourbon instead of 3.
*Jim Rhodes, the developer who stated on camera that water cannot be allowed to be a factor in the growth of Las Vegas. Proof that brain donors can walk and talk.
This water shortage is scary.
We live in the Arizona desert and worry that the wells will run dry.
Yet just down the road is a sign that reads "New carwash going in here."
Bah humbug
