DHS Ammo?

A couple of years ago, SGAmmo was selling cases of Winchester .223 62Gr HP marked FOR TRAINING USE ONLY - purple box, purple cases. I bought a case. Shoots well in my M&P15.

However, if a Government entity applies for the next year's budget, and hasn't allocated ALL of the previous year's allotment, (having left over funds in their coffers) they typically get a "budget cut" because they obviously didn't need all of last year's funding!

They will frantically find a way to somehow "spend all of their budget" before a certain date, ............ or the Purchasing Agents won't have a job the following year! Seen it happen.......

I think I finally shot up the last of my surplus DEA Federal .38 ammo that I was "gifted" (distributed to local LE agency for training purposes on paper) at the end of the 1989 fiscal year. Every now and then I find a few rounds in a speed loader or speed strip but I'm reasonably sure all the full boxes are gone. The AA traps loads fueled my Cowboy Action phase. Those were the days.

I know somebody who has a couple thousand rounds of Speer Gold Dot Hydrashok 147 grain +P+ .38 Special ammo that the Yankee gov't used back in the 90's . . .

One of our range officers once said that he could put a box of ammo and a $20 bill on a desk in HQ, turn around once, and the ammo would be gone. Come back a week later and the $20 bill will still be there.

They have to label those boxes that way so the federal LEOs know which box they are supposed to use... Bright colored boxes with large letters makes it easy.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has selected Vista Outdoor's Speer Ammunition brand as the awardee for their 9mm Service Ammunition.

What do the DHS agents use these days? 40 cal or 9mm?

What load?

Does anyone know?

Not a simple answer. DHS encompasses multiple agencies, just like DOJ. There really aren’t “DHS agents.”

Most of the agencies are now using 9mm. When they started the switch, Winchester Ranger 147 grain was what most got, off the FBI contract. As mentioned, Speer got the DHS contract… G2 147 grain with a blackened bullet.

.40 was what I was issued when I came onto CBP… with the H&K P2000 LEM. We were issued Federal HST 180 grain. We switched to Glock 19s (Gen 5 MOS)… and are in the process of moving to the Speer. If you go into my duty magazines… still have the Winchester, but other officers have Speer. Our AOR had a budget problem from DC, and a decimal point was put in the wrong spot. We actually didn’t qualify this quarter because we didn’t have the money, and received waivers for it.

HSI and ICE both are issued 9mm. USCG, I believe is still .40.
