586 L comp with 6 rounds’ cylinder!!??

Hello guys,
I just purchased (in an italian gun shop) a Performance center 586-7 3" L-COMP with only 6 shot cylinder (doesn't fit moon clips). The revolver comes with a beautiful aluminum performance center case and it's gorgeous. I didn't find any source about this particular configuration (6 shots). The seller told me he had this revolver in the shop since few years…Initially I thought it was a model 19 but there's a 586-7 stamp on it. Anybody could help me to find out something more about this gun? It does have the infamous lock mechanism…

It could be! (stranger things have happened in S&W collectors circles, like 586's with and without the infamous "M" overstamp).

In the US, this model is usually 7-shot, and incidentally the first 7-shot blued revolver made by S&W.

There were some special production runs after year 2000. If you have the case, is there a 6-digit product code somewhere on a label or on a receipt? If not, would your gun shop have a copy? The "experts" can use the product code to tell you more...

edit: Any 586 or 686 with a 3" barrel is a cool gun, and fun to shoot at the range.

Well, the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson says there was a run of 3" ported L-Comps done for Camfour Distributing in 2000. It gives a product code of 170170. No other info that I could find, sorry.

I am more and more curious about this matter.... There's no label on the case... It's like this revolver is a "fusion" between model 19 carry comp and model 586 L-comp...
Anyway i am going to try it at the range next week and i am very excited because the gun seems very well built.
Sincerly i love my 2020 python but this Smith & Wesson Performance center is very impressive...maybe will became my favorite...I will let the target decide it....

I couldn't find anything on six shot 586 L comps, but what strikes me is that your revolver doesn't have the typical full lug ejector rod shroud. It has the "1/2" shroud of the Model 19 and 66.

Yes you are right….but i have found in internet other 586 model that have the same full lug ejector rod shroud (i will post some pics later)…

Welcome to the Forum and Congratulations. The L-Comp is a favorite of mine

Most all of the source information on this site and in the Standard Catalog deals with models that are for the US Market

There are a few references to products shipped to foreign countries but that is by no means a complete list of the Export products

If you have the aluminium case, look under the foam. Here in America that is when a second copy of the end label is put by the Factory. The other copy is on the cardboard shipping box

That was the first run

This is the 200th gun from that original run

Product Code 170170 is still being manufactured and shipped more than two decades later

I do not see a difference between his barrel pictured above or my barrel pictured below.
Both are full lug

The 3" Model 19 Carry Comp uses a barrel of the exact same profile

Those are proof marks from the country that Smith & Wesson exported the revolver to

A 586 is supposed to be a sixgun. In 2004 there was a 586-7 with a 7 shot cylinder but it would have an internal lock that you couldn't miss seeing. (page 298 SCSW).

This 586 had some weird stocks on it when I acquired it but I brought it back to a more normal appearance:

The first several runs of the L-Comp do not have the internal lock (see photos above)

Thank you very much for your message. Unfortunately i haven't found any label under the foam....I will try to ask the seller for more infos but i doubt he would tell me something more...
The 586 L-comp is a fantastic revolver and is growing on me...
