My daughter and her family arrived yesterday evening to spend the Christmas holidays with us. Something seemed off, she was not her jovial effervescent self. I poured her a glass of wine and myself a bourbon and we sat down in the den for a daddy daughter talk. When I heard what she had to say I became livid.
As some of you know, my second oldest daughter is a middle school teacher. Before Christmas break, she admonished a student for not completing an assignment and asked that he turn in the work immediately following the winter break. The kid walked up to her and in front of the class, punched her in the face. She fell against the desk, nose bleeding, while the kid casually walked out of the classroom.
She's had problems with this particular student all year. She said that he's been disruptive, disrespectful and at times threatening. She complained to the school principal / administrator hoping to have the kid removed from her classroom but her requests were ignored and nothing was done to to alleviate the situation. This is not an inner-city school but one located in a middle class neighborhood.
My daughter is 45 years-old and has been teaching since she graduated collage. She loves what she does. She planned to teach until she retired but is considering just walking away now. She said that violence against teachers is becoming more prevalent than you think.
The police are treating it as an assault and the punk "may" face disciplinary action from the court system. But, she was told that most such incidents do not get charged criminally simply because the courts can't handle the number of routine assault incidents. The attacker walks away with essentially no punishment. He may be sent back to the same school or an alternate school because the school district is not relieved of the duty of providing an education even for very disruptive or violent students.
I'm still spitting nails. This is lunacy. Thanks for reading. I hope my post hasn't dampened your Christmas spirit but I needed to share with my Forum friends to help me get past this.
