Are people that stupid and/or arrogant today?

My wife and I were aghast at the number of people who crowded airports around Thanksgiving, because that and airplanes are a great way to spread various respiratory illnesses. With the three infestations at once, hospitals are really crowded. The week after Thanksgiving, thanks to these selfish jerks, the rate of infection related to those three diseases went up a lot.

I ended up in the ER a few weeks ago and they had to keep me in a room there for about 12 hours until there was a room. A friend's dad has had some odd stuff, and for over a week, he could not be transferred to a facility with higher care ability because there was no room. He STILL can't be admitted anywhere he needs to be seen. They actually sent him home under 24 her care by family until he can see a specialist as an out patient.

The insanity of placing social contact over enlightened self-interest is just amazing. Most of the people who want to travel simply do not need to. Your extended family will survive a while longer without seeing you - but your efforts to get to them might kill them or you. The number of people who are getting sick with flu, covid, or RSV as a result stupid visits is both staggering and completely unnecessary. It is utterly predictable.

Want contact with the distant family? Phone. Computer chat. There are other options that are not nearly as ill-advised.

The media lies about everything else why would people trust them to be truthful about the weather?

As a young Engineer I lived in Buffalo and traveled quite a bit. Always stayed in Holiday Inns and when you woke there was always a newspaper outside your door. (US News)

One day the front page had a picture and a story of the death-defying blizzard in Buffalo. I called home and the wife said: "Wait". When she came back she said the sun was shining and the front yard was green grass.

I remember that week the mayor chastised the paper for printing a "file photo"

So I should cancel my hunting trip and we can all sit around at home.

Nope

In '71 we had a sudden classic ice storm that made the road in front of our property impassible - at the corner of the property was 4 roads that met in a crossroads with all directions being a slight upgrade, but enough to prevent any car or truck being able to get traction. My teenage son got on the tractor with tow chains and drove down there to see if he could help. When he returned about two hours later he was loaded with money that the drivers gave him. He didn't charge, just accepted the gifts. For several years afterward, he always looked forward to the next ice storm. He learned a lot about the wonders of ice.

"...Ditjak Ilunga from Gaithersburg, Maryland, told CBS News he was on his way to visit relatives in Hamilton, Ontario, with his daughters when their SUV was trapped in Buffalo. After spending hours with the engine running he made the desperate choice to risk the howling storm to reach a nearby shelter.

He carried six-year-old Destiny on his back while 16-year-old Cindy clutched their Pomeranian puppy, and followed his footprints in the snow drifts.

"If I stay in this car I'm going to die here with my kids," Mr Ilunga recalled thinking.

He said he cried when the family walked through the shelter doors. "It's something I will never forget in my life," he said...
New York calls in military police to enforce driving ban in Buffalo
"It's like a Category 3 hurricane with a bunch of snow mixed in," Chief Tim Carney of the Erie County Sheriff's Office told The Buffalo News of the brutal conditions."
What could possibly go wrong?

Speaking of Buffalo, Katie Pavelik of Fox said the homes of the folks who stayed home were warmed by oil and gas, fossil fuels, NOT solar panels or wind turbines. Food for thought...

Circumstances dictate tactics applies here just as well. You might have more favorable conditions, you might have better gear and skills. Around here, the majority of folks are not accustomed to real snow, and the plowing generally does not get up to abysmal.

What I am referring to is the vast majority of sheep who completely devoid of situational awareness and good judgment. They are the majority in Washington, especially on the I-5 corridor.

Indeed. Nothing against solar panels etc. but probably not too practical in Buffalo, esp. in winter. Fossil-fuel furnaces and boilers still need power to run, but if you have a generator, you can at least stay warm if the power goes out.

I'm betting 2023 will be a banner year for Honda and Generac.

And it is worthless on ice, especially black ice.

I've had 4 wheel drive or good all-wheel drive vehicles for the past 25 years and have never been stuck or stranded. When LE/DOT states No Travel advised, I don't. Exception being in town once in awhile.
I do feel Southwest airlines made some bad decisions early on during this past storm that has resulted in the huge mess still going on.

There is little doubt that Southwest have some hard questions to answer. Their own staff are saying that their IT system for scheduling is so stone age it cannot cope. When you cannot issue instructions to your workers, you have a problem.

I flew back to Las Vegas from Mexico yesterday (direct flight, thankfully) and the ramp at Terminal 1 was full of Southwest aircraft. How many of them had pilots and cabin staff to crew them I cannot say.

The problem with a lot of todays adults and kids, is that they have their faces
jambed in to their PC's or Cell phones and never get out into he real world
and lean what "Mother Nature" has in store for them.

A Bic lighter, whats that for?
Why would you put a blanket in the back of your car?
Whats the water bottles for ?
Why fill up when you are half empty?
Get that fire extingisher out of here, it;s taking up room !!

Logic would think so..... but whatcha wanna bet that something shiny will take preference.

I think I have this beat...its the GPS's fault.

Driver blames GPS for driving into icy Vermont lake – Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News

And then there is the endless supply of dimwitted truck drivers that blindly follow their GPS

Another stuck truck blocks Notch Road

Several years ago a pair of county detectives were using GPS, which told them to turn left. They did, onto a one way street, going the wrong way. They swerved to avoid oncoming traffic and rolled their new Taurus down an embankment. They heard lots of "county defectives" comments for a while after that adventure.

Quite a few years back I belonged to the local wilderness search and rescue unit.
Every year we had a banquet and voted on who was going to win the wilderness idiot of the year award. Never lacked for candidates. This was back when this state was blessed with a serious lack of city slickers.
They come in all shapes and sizes and have been around for a very long time.
Note: when I was young I was guilty of pushing the limits, taking unnecessary risks and generally acting a fool. We learn by doing and I would venture to say many of the old salts on this forum were once not so bright as we are now.
